Pre-Game: Canyon Lake @ Wimberley
Pre/Game CANYON LAKE & WIMBERLEY Canyon Lake @ Wimberley Hawks (0-0) Texans (0-0) Game Time: 7:30pm August 28th History: Wimberley Leads the series, 9-3 2008 Hawks 07 Texans 41 2009 Hawks 15 Texans 38 2010 Hawks 18 Texans 38 2011 Hawks 14 Texans 50 2012 Hawks 03 Texans 40 2013 Hawks 28 Texans 13 2014 Hawks 27 Texans 28 2015 Hawks 28 Texans 14 2016 Hawks 21 Texans 31 2017 Hawks 13 Texans 20 2018 Hawks 33 Texans 14 2019 Hawks 07 Texans 45 ===================================================
Canyon Lake did not play well last year when the Texans came to the Hawk Nest and put a whuppin on the home team, 45-7.
Wimberley has not been scared to face a slot-t team and have proven it through this series as well with their encounters against the Navarro Panthers.
For Canyon Lake to be able to hold their own with the Texans, then the battle in those trenches will have to be won or at least break even to give the upstart Hawks a chance.
Having a decent scrimmage did instill some hope for this early season battle, but will that be enough, will be answered this Friday night.
Canyon Lake has not had a lot of offensive success in those first game encounters since starting back in 2008. This first game will be against a state ranked foe that was in th Texas State Championship game a few months ago. A loss but being ranked 2nd in this Great State does carry some weight and confidence for this home team.
The Hawks have opened their season with 4 straight wins and presently have a 7-5 first game record thus far. During CL’s two game rampage during the 2016-17 season. The Hawks won a district championship and finished 2nd the other year had an offense scoring 78 points during those two years.
Without those points, The Lake has amassed 110 points or 11 points per outing. Those numbers will not be helpful on Friday night and breaking out of the gate would be helpful for a young defensive unit against this juggernaut opponent.
Wimberley will be returning 8 on the defensive side which held last year’s Hawks to 219 yards of offense with 188 of those yards by the run, or less that 5 yards per carry.
The Hawk defense will have their hands full facing a pre-season offensive MVP in Christian Marshall (according to Texas Football Magazine). A new QB for Wimbo but returning running back, Moses Wray finished last year scoring 15 touchdowns while rushing for 1254 yards.
Yes, the Texans played another half season for those numbers but each game played added confidence for the returning starters as well as those upcoming junior varsity players.
A tough opening game for Canyon Lake that will certainly say a lot for what might be in store as the Hawks tough non-district continues.
For those Hawk fans that might not be making the trip due to the China Virus, the Canyon Lake Broadcasting team will have the game by streaming the visual and audio of this battle. (More info for looks to be a watch party….stay tuned)
Go Hawks!!
