CL Hawks Freshman Come up Short in Loss to Beeville, 22-18
Canyon Lake Freshman continued their one score deficit for the season after losing to Beeville’s Freshman squad, 22-18.
Both teams scored three times, it was those extra points that turned out to be the linch pin in this set-back as the Trojans were successful on two giving you the difference in this score.
Beeville opened the game like it might be a run-a-way when the Trojan’s second play covered 68 yards to pay dirt and the Hawks needing 8 points to get the game tied.
The Lake was able to answer that score in typical slot-t fashion taking 14 plays and covering 68 yards when Christian Rodriguez crossed the goal line from 7 yards out.
“I just found the holes,” Rodriguez said in response to his runs. “Our blockers were doing well and we just fought for yards any way we could.”
This Hawk drive had 9 of those plays going 5 yards or less. CL would convert 4 third down plays on this drive.
That would repeated two more times with a Beeville TD followed by the Hawks responding this time when Billy Welty scored from 6 yards, 12-16.
Canyon Lake’s drive this time was quicker with only one play under 5 yards and two plays with Daulton Burt going 17 yards and Rodriguez with a 15 yarder.
Beeville was able to recover a Hawk fumble on their 2nd half kick-off and that might have been the nail in that proverbial coffin with another score to increase the Trojans lead to 10 points 5 plays later.
Canyon Lake was good in answering the call when Welty was able to return the kick-off 79 yards that gave the Hawks needing to travel 11 yards for their score.
It took 3 plays with Christian Standifer with the honors from one yard out and the final score in the game.
That score had a pancake block that could have made a House of Pancakes commercial.
Tanner House took this would be Trojan tackler to the bottom of the pan and all that was needed after the play would be some syrup.
“He (the Trojan lineman) had been playing dirty,” House said. “It felt good to get that block and I just kept doing it.”
The Lake had a chance after a defensive stop and drove to Beeville’s 29 yard line but just did not have enough juice for that go ahead TD.
On what is needed for this group to realize different results? “Play hard the entire game and force the second half and to fall power,” House said with resolve.
Rodriguez had a quick response to that question, “We have to fight harder and be more physical….we are getting a lot better and we are working better as a team.”
CL’s Freshman continue to improve and it will be just a matter of time before that dam breaks for these games to go into another direction.
Way to Go Hawks!!
