Volleyball: CL Hawks Sweep Cuero, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22

The Lady Hawk’s Volleyball team circled their wagons in a win over Cuero on Tuesday night in a win, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22.

“Intense,” Head Coach Kim Clemons said when asked about her thoughts on this match. “I”m glad we battled back and had good rallies which helped during those ruts we had.”
With two starters out of action, Coach Clemons had to call an all hands on deck in this battle that turned into a hard fought sweep.
Cuero came into this game with a 6-3 record and started this night with a 3 point lead that worked up to a 5 point advantage during the first battle 7-12. This Gobbler team was in control throughout and had another 5 point lead, 17-22 with less opportunities to stage a comeback for the Hawks.
Up to this point in this game, the Hawks, had one rally of 3 points which had CL’s crowd sitting on their hands.
Mackenzie Ahlman took the serve and with the help of Emily Pena’s block and kill that would help jettison Canyon Lake out of their pit to a surprising win, 25-23. An 8-1 run did the trick and the Hawks wanted more.
That was the wake-up call Canyon Lake needed on what would be an, out of the blue, sweep.
Ava Calloway is all smiles after contributing to a Hawk win.
The 2nd game started exactly like the first with CL looking at a 1-4 deficit.
A kill by Claire Schroeder tied the score at 6 points a piece and a back and forth contest would commence.
This time it was on a service by Ava Calloway, a defensive specialist. With two aces and then a block from Schroeder had the Hawks with an, 11-6 lead.
“I wasn’t even thinking about the score,” Calloway stated. “I knew that all of us were capable and we fought for it….deep!! We had been out of system and we have so many in our front row playing different positions.”
CL had increased their lead to 6 points, 18-12 before a Gobbler rally that had this contest all tied up at 18 points.
The rotation had Calloway taking serve again and this time Schroeder was on her game again with two kills that help Canyon Lake with a, 25-20 win by outscoring the Visitors, 7-2.
Claire Schroeder was instrumental during key moments in win over Cuero.
“I think I was excited and the adrenaline got me going,” Schroeder said when asked bout her block. “When we got down we reminded ourselves that we needed to pick up our energy. We started communicating on where their hitters were and just adjusted based on where they were.”
The Hawks seemed to be getting stronger as the match proceeded with fewer unforced errors and starting with the lead on what would be their last game.
This game was tied 9 times with both teams matching each other’s ebbs and flows.
Cuero did not want to go home and was able to work a 2 point lead, 15-17 before the Hawks tied the game at 18 all. This Gobbler team then had a 3 point rally that put CL at the brink of needing a first game miracle.
Another fast finish this time on Ahlman’s service as the Hawks were in the same situation after their comeback win during the opening game.
This rally had Olivia Robinson with two kills (she finished with 11 kills) which finished the sweep, 25-22.
