Hawk Freshman Get Defensive in Win Over Lampasas, 16-6

Coach Barthels talking strategy in Lampasas win, 16-6.

Canyon Lake’s Freshman took care of business as they are now, 3-1 in district play and a win next week will give them the championship after a, 16-6 victory over Lampasas, 16-6.

World’s Finest say Hawks are Too!

The ReSporter has made some adjustments on the Fredericksburg loss two weeks ago as that team was dubbed as JV-B squad which means it did not have predominately freshman players. Thus the loss was mute or not a district freshman vs. freshman contest.

In this game the Hawks scored on their first possession after being helped by a Badger Center/QB dual that could not get their snap in control and then lost 26 yards in that manner for their first possession to open the half. Those plays were followed by an 11 yard punt that had your Hawks with a short 15 yards needed for their first score.

Caden Rodriguez first carry went for 10 yards followed by a Justin Abbott and Billy Welty carries to the one yard line allowing Rodriguez with the honors for that first touchdown.

Welty’s two point conversion would prove to be the winning points in this defensive battle.

CL’s defense was all business in allowing just one score to start the 2nd quarter after the Badgers took 3 plays to score after having a 27 yard scamper doing the most damage.

“We had big plays on defense,” Coach John Barthels stated defensively. “We tackled better and we played hard…and we are getting better.”

That is certainly the case as this is not the same team that donned their uniforms in August to start their introduction into high school football arena.

Canyon Lake finally hit the mother lode in this game with two completed passes in one game that had QB Steven Crowder finding Rodriguez on those two passes that had one which could have counted for more.

That first completion had Rodriguez bobbling the pass like a juggler for 10 yards before securing the catch and first down.

QB Steven Crowder & RB Caden Rodriguez talk bout passing game.

“The play was a roll out and I got lit up and did not see what happened,” QB Crowder recalled partially. “I said, ‘Wow what happened’, and I did not expect that.”

“It was an awkward play on how I was trying to catch the ball,” Rodriguez said like he was marching as a twirler in the band. “I thought I had it and then they had it….but I was able to finally secure it.”

CL needed 12 yards on this 3rd down play to continue their drive to start their 2nd half. This conversion was instrumental in getting the deciding score when Rodriguez had a 26 yard run that would put the Hawks in position for their second and last score.

Abbott’s two point conversion gave CL a 10 point lead and secured this win, 16-6.

Hawk’s defense forced a fumble on Lampasas’ next possession and keeping the home team not being able to reach 100 yards of offense.

LHS had 39 yards to close out the 2nd half giving a taste of The Lake’s dominance In securing this game.

                Let’s Go Hawks!!

On Crowder’s thoughts on this year’s team? “We have definitely improved and if we get our blocks right and have the right mind set in the locker room then we can win.”

Rodriguez surmised the season and final game, “We will need to block and keep the game close they (Burnet) has a good team and it will be close but I think we will win the game.”

A team that has had one possession losses and now seems to have a grasp of the ball for a catch in finishing the season with a win and championship.

Way to Go Hawks!
