Mountain Valley 8A Team can’t Finish it Out in Loss to Churchill, 27-08

Mountain Valley 8A offense waits for play in game with Canyon MS.

The MV Hawks could not capitalize on their chances in loss to Churchill at Hawk Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, 27-08.

Freedom Car Care says Go Hawks!!

“They (Churchill) were more physical than we were,” Head Coach Brandon Pawelek stated. “I know we had success in moving the football but we struggled on defense and we will continue to work on tackling and get more aggressive.”

That first quarter did not start well for the home team as the Cougar’s scored on their first two possessions while forcing a fumble in scoring twice in a 2 minute span.

The Mountain Valley Hawks did respond with in a typical slot-t way after using 13 plays going 65 yards with a Kaiden Lewis 6 yard touchdown. A two-point pat had MV right back in the thick of the action when Ryder Hopper connected with Bradley Sowersby for the pat.

That Hawk drive had just 3 snaps that were for more than 6 yards, with that biggest play coming on a swirling 16 yard rush by Sowersby and moving MV to Churchill’s 27 yard line.

Things continue to show promise after Carter Williams intercepted a Cougar pass stopping a Churchill drive on the Hawks 13 yard line.

With the half coming to a close, a perfect pass from Hopper to Sowersby for 64 yards, had MV needing just 12 yards for a lead going into half-time.

Bradley Sowersby had 123 yards of total offense in Hawks game with the Cougars.

“Ryan Hopper put the ball right on the money,” Sowersby said when commenting on the 64 pass play. “We just need to strengthen it out and win as much as we can and make sure we finish games and just finish it out.”

Coaches thought the play ended out of bounds and lost too much time before saving enough for a one play that left Mountain Valley still short inside the Cougar 10 yard line when the clock read 0:00.

MVMS would start on offense in the 2nd half and worked the ball to Churchill’s 41 yard line before a penalty led to a lost opportunity.

Churchill would say enough and scored twice in that final quarter using an onside kick for this quick strike assault.

Mountain Valley used the rest of the quarter with a 54 yard drive that was halted on the Cougars’ 24 yard line when time ran out.

A score that looked a lot worse than the yardage gained but missed opportunities would be that final blow in this loss.

Mountain Valley will be on the road next Tuesday when they travel to Canyon Middle School for a 4:30pm kick-off.
