MV Hawks 7B Lose Heartbreaker to SVMS, 16-06

MV Hawks coming up with strategy during 4th quarter touchdown drive.

The battle of the two remaining undefeated 7B games had the Smithson Valley Middle School with a win and an inside track for the GVAC District Championship in a win over the Hawks, 16-06.

“This was a long 3 to 4 hours,” Head Coach Brandon Burger sighed. “Our kids stepped up until the last play.”

                 Way To Go Hawks!!

There were some players that were moved up to the A game earlier when MV found out that they would lose students to covid a day before this big battle.

“We had players that were playing a position for the first time and with only one day of preparation, we did well,” Coach Burger said with mayo spread all over the bun.

Both teams exchanged some good hits as the first half finished with a, 0-0 tie and even in all the statistical measures.

MV Hawks had first dibs and with a first snap 55 yard run by Reese Pipkin, had Mountain Valley with a golden opportunity for a score but could not take advantage after running out of downs on the Mustangs 7 yard line.

“I was trying to beat the corner,” Pipkin recalled when asked his thoughts as he darted towards the goal line. “We will have to work for the ball and just go get’em.”

Pipkin recalled the pass reception he had in that last quarter that went for a first down and set the Hawks in position for their only score.

Reese Pipkin & Ben Parma after game against SVMS.

SVMS scored on their first possession to start the 2nd half after converting a 4th down play on a 22 yard run to the end zone, 0-8.

A critical 4th down and 5 yard conversion had Lucas Schexnayder running for 6 yards on a first half drive. The Hawks continued their quest for that first score but on this drive were stopped on the Mustangs 22 yard line.

Missed opportunities that could have finished with better results on any other Tuesday battle. But ‘quit’ would not define this Hawk group after seeing a great defensive play by corner back Ben Parma knocking a sure touchdown pass for the Mustangs, like a stealth aircraft.

“I freaked out because I was waiting for them to run,” Parma said with resolve. “I was confused and slow but it felt good too get to their receiver in time.”

The key to being a stealth player is giving a reporter, leaving an interview, without knowing if that player was there or not for that play.

               Let’s Go Hawks!!

SV scored again in the 4th quarter that had this home team enjoying a 16 point lead with 5:49 still left to play.

MV would not quit and finally broke that glass ceiling on a 72 yard drive with that previous mentioned 17 yard pass to Pipkin from QB Jordan Scheppler converting a do or die 4th down play.

The Hawks still had 13 yards needed to start their comeback and Pipkin did the deed from 6 yards out and a Hawk score with just under a minute remaining.

A successful on-side kick but running out of gas on this long night would have this upstart Hawk team leaving the stadium with a well deserved 2nd place in district play.

MVMS will be back in action next Tuesday at the Hawk Nest when they will face New Braunfels MS and a chance to keep their chance for first place with a loss for SV and finishing the season on a two game winning streak.
