Canyon Lake Freshman finish 2nd in District 13-4A after a set-back coming from Burnet Bulldogs to end their season, 38-20.

“We had more fight and we played hard,” Head Coach John Barthels surmised. “We had a chance to win district and throughout this season we got stronger and we continued to get better.”

This was certainly a year of seeing a team that improved from start to finish with a team that could continue to be an asset when they return next season as Sophomores.

After two quick scores for Burnet, Canyon Lake would get into this game when Billy Welty scored on one of his 3 touchdowns runs to close the gap, 14-06.

CL would respond to another quick strike from the Bulldogs when Welty took the rock for 64 yards to keep up with this tough Burnet team.

Welty had some extra juice with his runs that had this back with one of his best games (176 yards) on both sides of the ball.

“Our blockers were better and that allowed me to read the defense and find holes for those runs,” Welty said on his excellent day of work. “The season came together and we improved throughout this year.”

The Hawk’s defense forced a punt that went just 12 yards that had The Lake needing 36 yards for a chance to tie the contest.

Billy Welty and Dylan Wunderlich after just missing District Championship in loss to Burnet.

Then Welty worked a 28 yard run to the sideline and with a missed extra point trailed by two points, 22-20 with still time on the 2nd quarter clock.

That would be all the ammo CL would be able to get off as these Bulldogs finished their district battle with two more scores.

Some good stops by this Hawk defense that allowed an upstart team to get a comeback in this game and during this season and a game for a District 13-4A  Championship.

“We got a lot better.”Linebacker Dylan Wunderlich said. “We kept improving and this team came a long way from the start of this season.”

Canyon Lake’s improvement showed up with several games that were lost due to those little mistakes that resulted in one score set-backs.

Those situations continued to be eliminated as the season matured and good results were the biproduct and being in a position to win that ultimate prize.

Way to Go Hawks!!
