CL Hawks Get First Basketball Win over Fox Tech, 72-67

A new Scoreboard & Advertisement space added to Scoring Table this year. Thanks CL Booster Club!!

Canyon Lake’s Boys Basketball had a football team of reinforcements to help this Hawk team secure their first win of the season, 72-67.

“We had a one hour walk through which was a cliff notes version of the press and half court,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We just told the kids on offense to run and play. But we are at a big time work in progress and now we will train them and this was a practice as we are both trying to figure things out and who can play.”

The Hawks had a familiar face continue where he left off with Colton Winters scoring 24 points as he is averaging 20 points per game to start these first 3 games.

Those first two contests had Winters handling the ball but in this game, Tyler Pauly was on hand to help with that part of the game while being the other Hawk scoring in double figures with 18 points.

“We have a lot of young players and we needed to adjust to the speed of the game,” Pauly said in response to the slow start and accumulating 17 turnovers in that first half.

On the trying times of transitioning from football to basketball and what Coach Chapman said at halftime, “I just play 100% no matter what and I just love sports and Coach said we needed to take care of the ball and reduce our turnovers.”

Sometimes it is the obvious that needs to be stated and in this instance it paid dividends as the Hawks came back from an 11 point deficit in the 2nd quarter and outscored the Visitors, 45-34 in those last two quarters.

CL upped their made 3-pointers from 9 in their last contest to 10 with this win. Both of those numbers rank at the top as a team in made 3 pointers.

Another good sign was a reduced number of turnovers while shooting a solid 76% from the charity stripe.

Pauly was on his game at the free throw line in making all 9 shots and shooting 67% from the field while dishing out 3 assists.

Tuff Cantu led all players with 4 assists and was the high man on the totem pole with 8 rebounds. The Lake had 41 rebounds their high for this young season.

A host of football players making their move to the round ball enlarged the roster to 12 players.

This group helped in this win by scoring 28 points, 8 assists and 11 rebounds that went a long way while supplying more energy that would eventually wear down the Techsters.

Canyon Lake will be back in action on Tuesday when they make their first road trip to Burnet and battle the 1-1 Bulldogs. That victory was against Wimberley and a chance to continue to get acclimated to basketball.

Go Hawks!!
