CL Hawks JV Beat Burnet for District Crown, 35-08
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity wins District 13-4A District Championship.
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity won District 13-4A with their dominant, 35-08 outcome over Burnet JV on Thursday night at the Hawk Nest.
“The players deserve so much credit for staying focused and performing in a high pressure situation,” Coach Bret Hodges said. “They knew the district championship was on the line and didn’t allow themselves to be overwhelmed by the moment. Instead, they overwhelmed their opponent. It was a total team dominating effort in all three phases from the beginning to end.”

For this predominantly Sophomore class that makes up most of this Junior Varsity roster, these young men can hold up 4 fingers to indicate their 4th straight championship since they began playing for keeps in Mountain Valley Middle School.
That is not all….back during those middle school campaigns, the ‘B’ team can also be added as this group of players were champions too.
It so happened to be a Junior that took a big bite out of the Bulldogs in scoring the first 4 touchdowns for the Hawks by two receptions, running one in and returning a 70 yard kick-off to start the 2nd half.
Bade Holland was (Dutch words) overheersing as well as beheersing in his game against Burnet after accumulating 178 total yards with those 4 scores.

In fact, Bade was able to teach these Bulldogs how to Blijf, Zit and Volg Rechts as he had total command over the Dogs. By the end of Bade’s escapade these Burnet Dogs just ‘rolom with their tail between their legs.
On his thoughts in this game, Holland quipped, “Nothing different…we just executed better.”
Ethan Schedlbauer and Bade Holland finished their year in grand fashion.
It seemed that Holland left everything on the field including many words to describe his incredible evening.
Canyon Lake scored on 3 of 4 possessions during the first half while the Bulldogs scoring their only touchdown early in that 2nd period. That was the extent of the damage as The Lake never trailed in this battle.
After the Hawk defense forced a punt to start the game, CL drove quickly to Burnet’s 11 yard line with 3 consecutive explosive plays with a Holland 16 yard run, Tyler Balderas 19 yard run (finished with 112 yards) and then an Ethan Schedlbauer 27 yard romp (finished with 105 yards for the game).
Penalties would slow the Hawk’s first drive that had the host team needing to convert a 4th down and 18 on the 19 yard line.
Quarterback Sam Zinn would find The Netherland Kid (Holland) with a 19 yard pass for that first score.
The Hawk defense continued their strong showing with another stop which had CLJV scoring on a Holland 54 yard dash and 14 points during right before the close of the first quarter.

Burnet converted a fourth and 9 yards needed for a touchdown on their next time with the ball as this play happened on a 33 yard pass and score.
After recovering a Bulldog fumble right before half that had Canyon Lake needing 48 yards to score. It took just 4 plays and once again, Holland would get his third touchdown on a 17 yard pass with just 12 seconds before intermission.
Holland would step, on the Bulldog’s tail, to start the 2nd half on a 70 yard kick-off return that for all intense and purposes ending this game with a, 29-8 advantage.
How bout that kick-off return? Holland said, “I was thinking another Hawk would get the ball but I just picked up the ball and ran.”
Canyon Lake controlled every facet of this contest that always starts in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
Griffen Williams was one of those Hawks that would will his dominance against Burnet.
“When I got here (moved to Canyon Lake from Lubbock) I had been told that the Sophomore class was good and that was one of the reasons I wanted to come here,” Williams remembered. “After losing that first game we decided that we didn’t want that to happen again and it kept us going the rest fo the 9 games.”
Lineman Gabriel Geving was part of that turn around at the beginning of this contest as the Bulldogs did have a back that was quick and getting some yardage, Then a Geving tackle that had local grocery stores take notice as he threw that back like a sack of potatoes that had the impression that this game would change for a dominating fashion.
Trench-men Griffen Williams and Gabriel Geving were so good they did not need their eyes open to dominate.
“I wasn’t going to let those runs continue and I just sent him (the runner) flying,” Geving said with a smile. “In that first loss (Wimberley game) we started slow and then started to pay more attention and became more active to win out.”
That was the situation that was evident during this campaign and now this group will need to come up with a way of not needing a loss to get pave a way for a good season.
It would be a Schedlbauer 12 yard run in the fourth quarter that had this Junior Varsity sending these Dogs to the Pound for good.
“We came into this game with the mindset that we would not lose and we had a different attitude,” Schedlbauer said. “We knew if we could stop our simple mistakes then that would fix our drives.”
Another dominating year for this group that will now be preparing for taking those championships to the Varsity during the next two years and a chance to continue their dominance, on top of the heap.
