CL Hawks Lady Basketball Start with Win over Poteet, 32-27

The Lady Hawk’s Basketball season tipped off this past Tuesday with a win over Poteet, 32-27.

Kylie Rust and Maddie Pipkin help CL starting with a win over Poteet.

“It was a long drive! And we were tired the next morning,” Head Coach Zach Burleson stated. “But it was nice for the girls to get a chance to get out on the floor and play a game. We just hope that we are able to continue to give them these opportunities to compete..”

This will be an interesting year for a team that lost over 90% of their stats with just two returning players that had any significant time on the hard wood last season.

Kaitlyn Cox and Shelby Murphy were those two players that combined for right at half of the points scored in this battle.

“We had a pretty shaky start but we were able to do enough to pull out a win,” Coach Burleson continued. I’m very happy for the girls, we have a lot of new faces and are looking to gain some experience . We must do a better job of rebounding, blocking out, rotate on defense and take care of the ball. Those are the things we are going to have to improve at.”

New faces is certainly a truism with one Senior, two new Juniors, 4 Sophomores and one Freshman filling out this year’s roster.

CL started the first quarter being down 7 points with seconds left before Cox drained a 3 pointer helping with some momentum going into that next stanza.

At the 3:10 mark in that second period, The Lake, had their first lead, 13-11 which was short lived after the Aggies were able to wrestle that lead back and with two point advantage entering the second half, 15-13.

A Coach Burleson halftime talk helped turn the tide with an 11 point output combined with holding Poteet to just 3 points. Canyon Lake would finish the night holding onto that lead and first win to start their campaign.

               Let’s Go Hawks!!

Sophomore Maddie Pipkin had high point scoring 9 points making 5 of 7 shots while sharing the lead with 3 steals. That stat was matched by Junior Katie Taliaferro and Murphy.

That 3 point make for Cox was her 21st for her career and presently is at the doorstep for the top-ten needing 3 more to break into that elite group of players.

The Hawks will be back on the road for their next game at Austin Northeast and their first home game is December 4th when the Marion Bulldogs come to the Hawk Nest.

Way to Go Hawks!!
