Recap CLJV Continued Success with District Championship
Hawks went through district and their season with a great work ethic that resulted in wins. Like this game in Lampasas.
Canyon Lake’s Sub-Varsity Football teams have enjoyed successful seasons that will give hope for the near future of having more playoffs and the hardware that accompanies that success. When these players make their next jump to Varsity.
This year’s Junior Varsity has played like a winner for 3 straight years and that certainly happened again this season. The ReSporter wants to go into more detail that will show just how important this group will be for the next couple of campaigns.

First off, this team did suffer one loss and one tied game but in the case of that 21-21 battle with Fredericksburg, the Hawks, would have another chance to rectify that mistake due to so many different avenues that transpired during this Covid season.
The ReSporter had a chance in catching up with Head JV Coach Bret Hodges to get his thoughts on this Championship Team’s Season.
On what Coach Hodges assessment from start to finish with this Junior Varsity squad, “Not a day was wasted. That fact showed through the steady improvement of our team. I’m extremely proud of the high commitment level the players maintained.”
That speaks volumes for this group of players that has been on the winning side of the field for an incredible 95% of the time.
Notice that number is based on a Sophomore class and counting both A & B Teams while at Mountain Valley Middle School.
Those real numbers would be a sparkling, 52-2-2 record.
This year had some of those sophomores that were promoted to the varsity so The ReSporter wanted to get Coach Hodges thoughts on what happened on that opening day loss against Wimberley.
“That could have been one factor (losing a group of Sophomores) but as soon as you start looking for excuses other than the simple fact that we need to execute, tackle, play better your really can’t grow as a team. Our guys certainly weren’t looking for excuses.”

That was the same thought coming from several players that were quoted after games this year. In fact, that loss served as an extra incentive in not wanting that to happen again.
The ReSporter was intrigued on how well this team played Fredericksburg after finishing with t tie during that week before.
“There are always going to be learning experiences throughout a season,” Coach Hodges started. “Many times, you don’t know when, but they will happen. We were brought down to earth after a few easy victories even after starting slow in several of those games. Our guys were warned that when you play a solid football team, slow starts will come back and bite you. Fredericksburg was the victim of the very lesson they gave.”
Makes sense as that second and deciding contest still had a slow start but after that first Billie drive, the Hawks, were dominant as you can see their Season Stats below.
On the biggest surprise and biggest disappointment?
Coach Hodges was quick with his response, “We had two surprises. First, that we had a season and second, that it was completed without interruption.
Coach Hodges continued on his biggest disappointment, “That the season ended. It’s a fun group to coach.”

Take a note on one of the most important positions for a team coming from the quarterback. First, you had the starter playing defensive back on varsity this season and then another QB suffering an injury (during the middle of the season) that had that third QB ready and not seeing one item that was missing in playing well as the season came to a close with more wins and another hoisting of a trophy.
The Hawk Nation can certainly ear mark this group of players as this same dominant team can come together and continue to earn district championships as they enter their Junior and Senior campaigns.
Enjoy the Stats below and do note that The ReSporter was able to secure just the Team stats in a 41-0 win over Austin LBJ so those individual numbers will not match up to the team numbers on those stat lines.
