CL Hawks Varsity Run Away with Win over Llano, 77-65

Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball took a week off and came back with a healthy dose of offense in win over Llano, 77-65.
“In the first quarter we started slow,” Head Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We are still an infant and we are still learning how to walk and run.”

That was said in response to how many players are still being moved around as returning players from football and injuries. Now those situations are starting to settle into what type of team this year’s edition will or can become.
“I saw some good things as we played with tempo and we played hard,” Coach Chapman assessed. “If we can do that consistently then we can fix those errors.”
That will go a long way for the development of this group of athletes as that infant part of this team is still in the fetal position when playing defense.
The Lake is giving up a 65.4 point average which ranks last since basketball got going over 13 years ago. Every school the Hawks have played has reached 60 points or more as the olé defense continues to learn that critical part of the game.
CL had several records achieved on this night with an offense that sank the most shots beyond the 3-point arc with 14. The old record was 12 made shots that happened back during the 2013 season in a game when the Hawks played Lampasas.

On that same behind the arc shot, Colton Winters contributed 7 to that record, as he had his 3rd consecutive game of scoring 20 or more points with 29 in this win. That old mark was 5 makes shared by 5 Hawk players.
Tuff Cantu was on fire too as he shot, 4 for 7 beyond the arc, scoring 19 points for his best outing as a Hawk.

Records kept coming when Tyler Pauly made a statement by distributing 11 assists and that beat the previous mark by Doug Hubnik who reached 10 in a game against Lockhart on December 5, 2012.
A record that had stood for almost 8 years. Hubnik is the all-time leader in assists when he finished with 187 during his career.
Pauly (116 assists) will be a major player in trying to reach that record as this Senior still has 20 games to add to his total. Pauly needs 72 more assists to leave school with that impressive mark.

Pauly was short on the scoring end but his assists and steals (6) will go a long way in helping for more wins. Those 6 steals has this player tied with 6 other Hawks for 3rd place in that department.

“We moved the ball better,” Pauly said. “We finally played with a better pace and made our shots…I did not have my shot but when I can pass it then we can still get 2 points.”
That was a truism but on this night those assists turned to 3 points which was a bonus.
In this game, Canyon Lake continued with those slow starts and with a beginning that looked familiar to those other slow starting contests would be short lived, but the start had this Yellowjacket’s squad taking a, 10-9 lead with 4:13 left in that opening period.
Both teams continued going back and forth as Llano led, 18-15 with seconds left before a Shawn Pendleton make and foul shot that tied the score at 18 all to end the quarter.
Cantu scored 7 points during a one minute stretch during the 2nd quarter and that helped put the Hawks over a hump and a lead that would carry to a final, 12 point win.
Meanwhile Winters was freezing these Yellowjackets scoring 11 points in the 2nd quarter to go along with Cantu’s 8 points. That had CL blitzing Llano with 26 points and a 16 point lead heading into intermission.
During the second half, Cantu continued his scoring on taking and making 3 shots beyond the arc while Winters continued his cold streak scoring 15 points.
Winters was nursing an ankle sprain that kept him from suiting up in the loss to Burnet last week and this player might be that offensive spark needed as this season matures. In four games Winters is averaging, 22.5 points per game.
Colton Winters was frigid in win over Llano scoring 29 points.
“I was bummed at first,” Winters said when commenting on having to miss a game last week. “I started feeling my shots but we fouled too much and our defense wasn’t that great.”
Winters has the ‘coach speak’ down which would get this player in a coaches suit in no time.
“We will just need to keep pushing the pace and our offense is starting to get complete,” Winters continued before ending with what will need to happen for a better season. “We need to work on our defense.”
Certainly a good game to see after a poor showing in Burnet.
The Hawks will be back in action this Friday on the road in Marion with that first tip-off at 5pm with the Freshman team.
Next home contest is December 11th when Lockhart comes for a visit to the Hawk Nest.
