Book End Dingers Allow Hawks to Take Kerrville Tivy, 6-4
Junior Dalton Stanley is ready to swing in game earlier this season. Stanley continues helping defensively by throwing out baserunners behind the plate.
With bookend home-runs by Tyler Pauly and Matthew McLain, the Hawks won their final contest in the Comal Clash Tournament over Kerrville Tivy, 6-4.
“Baseball is fun when it is played on the other side of the fence,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “We lost our focus earlier in the tourney and we will need to time to clean that up.”

Canyon Lake will now have two games next week on the road when they meet No. 1 Sinton on Friday and then with a treat against Mathis at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi on Saturday.
This was CL’s 14th win and will now start narrowing their scope in getting ready for a tough District 28-4A after their trip to Corpus.
In this Tivy bout, a lead off hitter, Tyler Pauly, took the very first pitch over left-center field for a quick Lake lead.
“I like to attack the first pitch,” Pauly said when asked how he could have that type of success without taking any pitches. “When I hit it, I thought it might be a double but it got up into the jet stream. That was my first one and now I have got that out of the way.”
On what CL will need to do as spring break being the last buffer before district play, “We will need to be super focus and ready to go…we need to clean up our previous mistakes and get ready to play our best ball.”
With that homer Pauly now holds the record for most rbi’s with 45 the old record was tied last year by Caleb Williams with Travis Walker (44) who reached that number in 2012.

Peyton McMullen started and went 3 innings with no runs after getting out of a jam in that 3rd inning after two singles to lead off that frame. Two fly ball outs and an unassisted out by Pauly squelched any hope for a break out inning for Tivy.
Hunter Anderson took the mound with a well managed 4th inning with 2 strikeouts and a catch by McClain keeping the slim Hawk lead, 1-0.
The bottom of that same inning CL had two one out singles off the bats of Jeremy Greene and Gunnar Walker. Pauly followed with a walk to load the bases with one out.
Hunter Anderson’s sacrifice fly ball and then a double steal where Austin Bowers was able to score by stealing home after Tyler Pauly started the run down from first base for his steal attempt.
That escapade gave, The Lake, a 3 run lead before a Kerrville rally to tie the score in during the top of the 5th inning.
Tivy had book-end doubles with two players being walked to load the bases in between. That allowed the second double clearing the bases for a, 3-3 tie.
Kerrville wasn’t finished with another score in that next inning without the benefit of a hit. Runners made it to first via a hit batter, reaching on an error and then a sacrifice had two players in scoring position.

Hayden Baker had relieved Hunter Anderson in that previous inning hit his second Antler player and a balk would score a run for a 4-3 lead with one more chance for Canyon Lake.
Starting the 6th frame, Catcher Dalton Stanley, worked the count for his second walk of the game and then two fly outs had the Hawks needing help as courtesy runner Bowers was joined on the base paths with a Tanner Schultz walk.
This story book ending was a good ending when McLain took a full count over the fence for CL’s second walk off win of the tournament to close the book-end day in a story book ending.
“It was a fast ball down the middle,” McLain recalled. “I know a lot of their players and it gave me an opportunity to talk smack but it was my first walk-off homerun.”
On this game and playing centerfield, “Centerfield is my favorite position because you need to use your best judgement of knowing how to get to a ball.”

On where the team is as district approaches, “It is a mental game…as everybody looks up to the Seniors, we will need to keep the energy and everything up and we have to contribute. This team has everybody’s back and we have a cowbell that we ring if we make a mistake to just flush it and get back to work.”
Hopefully that cowbell will be rung less as this season continues as the contests that count come calling.
With those two homers, the number of times a baseball game has had a first pitched ball home-run and a last pitched ball resulting in a home run would not be many.
Certainly not in CL’s history as just hitting two homers in the same game has happened only three times.
This story was a good book ending and a good way to exit for the epilogue with a Spring Break that will help prepare the Hawks for district play that starts 9 days.
