Hawk’s Softball Starts District 26-4A this Week & Standings

District 28-4A in Softball will begin their schedule starting this week when the Hawks travel the Back-Bone to battle Wimberley on Wednesday at 2pm.

The district has, have and have nots. with Boerne and Fredericksburg the two schools that ‘have’ a winning record along with Bandera.

That Bulldog team has played more games but finding those scores poses a question if this team actually has a winning record at this writing.

Based on some of their scores it would seem that Bandera might be underwater and therefore joining the rest of these district schools.

Boerne and Billies will be a good battle as both teams have some good wins over 6A schools most notably, Smithson Valley.

The Greyhounds do seem to have a better resume but district will usually have teams play closer to the vest which can give a team different results.

Looking at the other teams records will give you an idea that there will be 4 schools fighting for two playoff spots as this week starts a district trek for a round robin games.

Canyon Lake has had a heck of a time getting players set playing or batting in the same order for each game.

“We have had injuries and other things that has had players in different positions,” Head Coach Hayley Galloway said. “This year we will be known as a game needing flexibility.”

“In our last game we had players in spots where they have not been and that will show up with our errors,” Coach Galloway stated.

Canyon Lake does have players that have an opportunity to have some wins but it is those repetitions in the field and in the batter’s box that will need to mature for making a run and qualify for a place that has teams ordering Playoff T-Shirts as the end of these next few weeks come to an end.

“I think our pitchers are getting better and doing a better job,” Pitching Coach Elizabeth Carter stated after being asked how Kenzie Sayles and Gabby Barnes had reduced the number of base on balls in their last game. “We tell the girls that we want them to allow our defense to make plays…you can’t play defense if you walk batters.”

A Senior and Freshman in the circle this year and Sayles has not been called on for a whole season as she has had situational starts throughout her career. Playing in the outfield is her best position for defense as she can quarterback her teammates for getting fly ball outs.

Barnes will be a stellar infielder and pitching has not been her major roll giving you an idea of how hard a job Coach Carter has in front of her for getting the best from these two young ladies.

Pitching in Softball is what stirs the drinks and how the circle goes will determine how well CL can place themselves when battling their district foes.

Confidence will be a huge commodity and there was several players that showed there could be a turn on the offensive side this season.

Shelby Porter has turned it on in the batter’s box as district season has approached and has a .400 average in her last 7 contests.

Barnes sports a .333 batting average in her first 11 games which speaks well for a freshman who has made her move up from middle school a success so far.

Riley Glenn-Millhouse will bring power and a salty .385 average to the plate while playing several positions on defense.

More power has come in the name of Emma Lane who had a home run this season and has 4 extra base hits.

Those are just a few of the players that will need to make that next step forward when The Lake takes the field on Wednesday in Wimberley.

Consistency will be a key as district starts with Coach Galloway having a chance to put a winning formula on the field with a chance of taking care of teams that are realistically in the same boat and battling for a post-season birth.

Canyon Lake will start district with two away games before a Boerne visit when spring break is over.

The key will be seeing what happens with these 4 schools not named Boerne or Fredericksburg.
