Baseball: Canyon Lake Wins District 28-4A Beating Wolves, 13-1

CL Hawks with District Champion Trophy!

Hawks controlled their destiny with a District 28-4A Championship after beating Davenport, 13-1 on a wet Thursday night.

             Way to  Go Hawks!

On how CL will handle the lay-off before the post-season gets going, “We want to play ball going into the playoffs so we can’t be happy with easy practices….and good practices will give us a better chance when we start the play-offs,” Head Baseball Coach Victor Escamilla stated.

On how the schedule was planned with those tough outings with SA Johnson & Sinton, “To win ballgames in district it helps putting the players in pressure situations which prepares us for those tough teams in our district.”

The Texans beat the Greyhounds, 3-2 giving CL an outright district title.

Canyon Lake is familiar with both schools that might finish last in District 27-4A, after playing Gonzales to start their season and Cuero was an exhibition game.

The Lake ended their regular season riding an 8 game winning streak while averaging over 10 runs per outing in district play.

Extra base hits outnumbered singles in this contest with 3 doubles, a triple, and a home run.

Tanner Schultz and Griffen Williams each doubled and Schultz added a triple while Williams gave notice to NASA that he would be launching a missile for his home run swing.

Newcomers Griffen Williams & Matthew McLain hit with power!

“I’m feeling a lot more comfortable at the plate,” Williams said in response to coming back from his injury. “I spent time watching the pitching and that helped me with my approach.”

On Williams thoughts on this season up to this point, “I am really excited about my future for my career for years to come.” What about this next phase of games, “We need to keep doing what we’ve been doing and just work harder.”

CL had another player (Matt McLain) with Williams that contributed in their first season which helped boost this team and became a force by garnering 22 wins, which is 7 more than the best Hawk season in 2010.

On thoughts on coming for a season that ends up winning a championship? “I came at the right time,” McLain said matter of factly. “This was the right group of players and we practice like we play and we will need to keep that same mind-set.”

McLain has the best on base percentage for the team….what are your thoughts when walking to the plate? “Each at bat has different situations and I think to get a single or swing for the fences but it is bout getting on base anyway you can to help the team.”

Mission Accomplished as this was a first for the Hawk Baseball program ending on top of district and becoming the 6th CL sport to win it all.

First inning struggles surfaced again in this game when Davenport started with an infield single and then after a strikeout and ground out were able to load the bases with a hit batter followed by that final walk scoring a run.

           Let’s Go Hawks!!

That would be the only run scored for these Wolves while CL would have 13 unanswered runs to finish this game to hoist their first place trophy. The Hawks would plate a run for those next 5 innings as the run machine that started on this 8 game win streak continues.

This has been a prolific season with the Hawks scoring 89 runs during this streak. CL has topped 200 runs for the first time as those middle of the season games had a team searching for anything to get runs has changed quite drastically.

Canyon Lake would be in a walk-a-thon to end this game by scoring 4 runs in the top of the 6th as the Wolves pitchers walked 5 Hawks in a row with some added passed balls and wild pitches as the only hit was Williams starting this frame with a left field double.

Tyler Pauly struggled with control but on the flip side was not hurt in just allowing two hits for his 8th win this season another Hawk first with an added 13th win in a row stretching into last year’s games.

World’s Finest say Hawks are Too!

Now The Lake will take a week off for playing games as other districts finish their games and the next action commencing in May.

Wimberley beat Boerne and that split has CL all alone in first and making this trophy that much sweeter.

Way to Go Hawks!!
