Hawk Softball Win Must Game with Comeback over Bandera, 13-9

A winning Canyon Lake pose after a Must Win outcome over Bandera!

             Fredericksburg @ Bandera

Go Hawks and Take Davenport!!

In the above District 28-4A Standings you have 4 teams still with a chance for a 3rd or 4th seed with one game remaining.

Since these bottom 4 teams have yet to beat Freddie or Boerne then The ReSporter will deduce some games based on that criteria.

Bandera has a date with Boerne and Wimberley faces Fredericksburg next Tuesday and baring a covid outbreak….that would give a loss to the Bulldogs and Texans.

Those two results would take Bandera out of the race for a spot in the top 4 and bring Wimberley down a game. A Hawk win over Davenport would give CL a tie with the Texans and need for a tie-breaker via a play-in game or a rock-paper-scissors decider.

What we do know is Fredericksburg has won the district and Boerne has a 2nd seed.

A Davenport win would result in tying up the Wolves and Hawks for a play-in or spin the bottle for a chance to be in the post-season as the final entrance in District 28-4A.

Let’s Go Hawks Beat Davenport!!

So, either way it goes for Canyon Lake, another play-in for a 3rd seed or a play-in for a chance securing a 4th seed and eliminating Davenport.

Pretty simple deducing and seeing that the Wolves beat Wimbo, 3-0 at their place shows that this game is by no means in the bag for the Hawks.

Now, The Lake’s, comeback win over Bandera has given some much needed momentum for the Home team and being 3-2 since beating Wimberley to start their Must-Win parade of games.

That Must Win scenario will happen again this Tuesday as a win should help by not playing Navarro who is winning their district. La Vernia looks to be the favorite for that 2nd seed in District 27-4A play.

Ever since Canyon Lake went through a rough start in district play it was important in working on finding ways to win quickly or the season would have been in their rear-view mirror when the Hawks faced Wimberley for their 2nd go around in district sporting a 1-4 record.

       Go Hawks Beat the Wolves!

Winning against schools not named Boerne or Fredericksburg would be a must for a chance to change their outlook and seeing some greener pastures.

That 4-3 home win over the Texans was clutch and reversed their first loss which was the same must win needed in taking care of Bandera.

“I’m so proud on how well we played tonight because we knew what this game was all about and we could have given up after they (Bandera) went ahead in the 4th inning and being down 6 runs,” Head Coach Hayley Galloway said with a sigh of relief.

Pitching Coach Elizabeth Carter talked about how CL was able to use both pitchers in tonight’s win, “I told them before the game that they would be on a short leash and that we would be making changes whenever we needed.”

Mission accomplished but not before some soul searching after these Bulldogs were able to score 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning and a BHS, 3-2 lead that now had The Visitors holding an 8-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the 4th frame CL was able to match those 5 runs and added one more tying the score at 8 a piece with 3 innings to go. Bandera did scratch across a run in the 5th but a Hawk 5 run onslaught with all those runs being scored with two outs would put the icing on a cake as Gabby Barnes held these Dogs on their leash by not giving up any runs in those last two frames for this Hawk Must Win.

This frame started with two strikeouts and then a Kenzie Sayles single was followed by another single for Jodi Glenn-Millhouse that scored Sayles tying up the score again.

Riley Glenn-Millhouse kept the inning alive working a walk before Emma Lane continued raising her slugging percentage to a team leading .592 with a double scoring the two runs that would be enough for a win.

“There was no way we were going to let them beat us,” Lane said with resolve. “We knew we could do it (comeback)….we just had to carry our energy and I just kept my confidence and that we would win this game.”

Shelby Porter & Emma Lane need one more Must Win on Tuesday.

On next week’s battle against Davenport, “We will transfer this confidence we have tonight to next week’s game and just play softball….it is not who we are playing.”

Shelby Porter was not satisfied though and singled home Lane for that final score, 13-9.

On how well Porter has been playing offensively this season, “I have been in control of the ball.”

What does that mean? “I am bringing the bat to meet the ball instead of allowing the ball to come to me.”

On the thoughts in the dugout after that Bandera 5 run inning, “We needed to keep our energy and attitude up and not choke and we did not stay down and we knew we could come back!”

Barnes would finish this game by retiring in Bandera giving up a walk and single while allowing her defense to close the doggy door for a Hawk win coming in those two final innings.

Canyon Lake will be up against it again with and you guessed it, must win, when they face Davenport on the road this next Tuesday with first pitch coming at 6:00pm.
