Hawk’s Softball Get Important Win over Texans, 4-3

Emma Lane and Gabby Barnes had honors in toting the Hawk Win’s Flag.

Canyon Lake’s Softball team got a much needed win in holding off the Wimberley Texans at the Hawk Nest, 4-3.

With this win, the Hawks have battled their way back into contention for a 3rd or 4th seed in District 28-4A play.

The Hawks lost their opening game against  Wimberley and redeemed that loss and now can control their destiny with two more wins as the second round of district contests continue through the next two weeks.

“We needed this win and we fought back twice,” Head Coach Hayley Galloway said with a sigh of relief. “(We) got ground balls and kept them from getting the ball into the air.”

Not getting those ground balls in that first game was the Hawk’s downfall and a Texans’ first round win.

On how CL will need to respond in these final 4 games? “No matter what, we still have to play good softball and continue to play strong defensively and keep this momentum.”

That the Hawk’s next two contests being against the top two schools will need confidence and improving as the season continues. That will help when facing a Bandera team that beat The Lake earlier and hopefully a continued effort with a win over Davenport. That scenario would have CL tied with Wimbo (based on them losing to Bandera or Davenport)  and garnering a tie-breaker for that 3rd seed.

“We just have to continue to play well and have fun….that is the difference (having fun) as well of not allowing those big first innings that plagued us the first time we played them.”

World’s Finest say Hawks are Too!

In this game, Gabby Barnes had her best outing which followed her first time in the circle against Wimberley after relieving Kenzie Sayles. That performance helped give the Hawks a chance for a comeback that just fell short.

This win was reminiscent of Barnes’ win over Ingram-Moore when she did not give up a hit and struck out 9 in a win that went 4 innings.

Wimberley was a much tougher opponent and for Barnes this was a 7 inning masterpiece giving up only 3 singles.

To start this game, Kenzie Sayles started with a single and then with 2 outs, Riley Glenn-Millhouse drove her in with a line drive single to left field.

Riley has been solid all year in leading the Hawks tied with Jodi Glenn-Millhouse with hits (17), rbi (14), and average .390.

On how the team approached these last two games, “We needed to be together and just concentrate on hitting the ball and playing for each other”, Riley stated. “We were cheering and rooting for everyone which makes playing a lot of fun….we had started off rough and that made us want to play even more to get the outs and this win.”

Defense was on display with one catch in right field that had some dance moves from Madison Hartman.

“I was playing back because I like to move up to the ball,” Technician Hartman deduced. “I knew I would have to dive for the ball and that caused me to do a figure 8 dive.”

Hartman continued, “We needed this win for payback and this can push us to more wins and this was very exciting.”

If you cannot enjoy yourself then playing a game can become a chore, this team sounds like they are having fun and now can use that energy for adding more wins to their ledger.

Emma Lane was perfect at the plate 3 for 3 with a double that just missed being her 2nd homer of the season. Lane’s double scored the tying run at 2 a piece, then tying the game with her third hit in the bottom of the 5th inning bringing Jodi Glenn-Millhouse tying the game at 3 runs.

Barnes had a one-two-three inning next that had CL with a chance to take the lead back which was realized in the first inning.

Gabby Rivera and Erin Hartman had walks to start the 6th frame and then a Wimbo error off a hit by Jodi Glenn-Millhouse drove in Rivera and CL’s winning run after the Hawks shut the door in the top of the 7th for this win.

The next two contests has the two top teams in district before a respite with Davenport (on the road) and Bandera at home that will seal the seeding for this year’s team.
