Peyton McMullen Signs Letter of Intent in Baseball for Texas A&M-Texarkana
Three Sport Athlete Peyton McMullen, signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Texas A&M University-Texarkana last Wednesday at CLHS.
Peyton was a year round sportsman and represented the Hawks playing QB for the Football team, Post for CL’s basketball squad and finished his last game on the pitching mound as a reliever in the Regional Finalist loss to Navarro.
McMullen will bring some heat to the Eagles’ baseball team after finishing his career with the Hawks with a career 1.44 era with 4 wins while recording 3 saves and striking out 61 opponents during his 3 year stint.
McMullen did not play baseball during his Sophomore year and that year keeping busy at the Cinders with some Track & Field action.
During his Senior Baseball campaign an 0.81 era in 26 innings of work in relief. McMullen gave up 11 hits while striking out 40 for this past season.
This athlete would also get running duties when waiting to be called on to end a game. McMullen’s baseball resume had this speedster with 6 stolen bases while scoring 21 runs as a courtesy runner usually for a Hawk pitcher or catcher during a contest.
On her thoughts, Jackie (Mom) McMullen was reflective, “He was always super focused…he might be all over the place on any given day and laid back…but on game day he would be focused when he knew he would have to get it done.”
“I’m nervous,” Mom continued when asked bout his next stop being in a college setting. “I will be right there to support him and I think he will do well…he will be playing with the big boys.”
Mike McMullen (Dad) exclaimed when asked his thoughts when he signed on the dotted line, “I was excited but thought he would be signing to play football but he started playing little league and basketball growing up and did well….It will be good not having a 300 pound meathead lineman chasing him down trying to knock his head off (if he was playing football).”
Dad McMullen continued, “There will be a lot of things on his shoulders and he has handled it well by being calm and laid back and he can be funny and quiet but when the lights are turned on, he becomes a totally different person especially how focused he became.”
When asked for some funny stories, Faith (Sister) was quick in remembering, “When Mom would try to put him down for a nap, he would get down at the crack of the door and scream at Mom wanting to to be let out.”
Faith continued, “I was a good kid and I took my nap because I knew I would be eating ice cream…Peyton loves to watch ESPN constantly and before he could walk he would throw balls up in the air to himself and catch them and while I would be sitting on the vacuum while he moved it around.”
Wow, it is always good to have a sibling around at these events since Mom & Dad are not privy to all those ‘little things’ that gives a different story on a real athlete.
Peyton shared his process on how he went from sport to sport during his days at The Lake, “It is a mindset and you always want to make the team better. But it was fun being at Canyon Lake and I want them (athletes) to not take it for granted and go hard in everything you do.”
On his new sports arena, “I liked the Coaches (Texarkana) and they were great and I am excited for the future.”
Texarkana’s Baseball team was 50 games over .500 during the past 5 years, so this team will be looking to add a solid reliever who can compete quickly while amassing more wins.
One of the biggest plays of the season occurred on the road when CL was on the verge of sweeping Boerne, a team that the Hawks had never beaten much less having a chance to sweep during a season.
“I saw the sign from Short-Stop Tyler Pauly and I knew I needed to make sure to be quick with my throw,” McMullen was reminiscing on finishing the game by picking off a Greyhound player on 2nd base. That pick-off was huge for Canyon Lake and set this team up for finishing the regular season on a winning streak that had a 28-4A District Championship.
“After that play…everybody kinda went crazy and we went to the bus looking for the broom for the sweep,” McMullen recalled.
A player that certainly had some incredible moments during his Hawk career between having the longest run as a quarterback (showing off that speed again) and blocking shots on the hard-wood.
Fun times and now a chance to continue in baseball, “I might try to walk-on to play basketball,” McMullen said as a multi-sport person would finish his time at CLHS while seeing what his future might have in store.
Thanks for your time at Canyon Lake and now focus on College when those lights are turned for Sports but especially in the Library!
Go Hawks & Go Eagles!!
