CL Hawks Football Lose Petition with UIL for Playing 3 Quarters in 2020

Canyon Lake Hawks prepare for first scrimmage with Cuero on Friday.

Of course the headline is not true but does bring up a point on how well last year’s team played going into that final quarter. A three period football game last season would have had CL going deep into the post-season which did have a wild campaign considering the ‘Covid’ season forced many different scenarios than any year since the Hawks started 13 years ago.

               Let’s Hit Em Hard Hawks!

If Canyon Lake can improve by 7 points this season then reversing that 1-5 record of losing by 7 points or fewer would = better outcomes compared to last season.

By going further into those contests you will find another tidbit that will need to transpire for changing those close losses into wins.

Losing the 4th Quarter was key to those set-backs. Look at the scores after three periods last season and losing that 4th quarter was on top of that list.

Counting the results of playing just 3 periods had CL with a 7-1-2 slate and then needing two overtime wins in having an undefeated season since that one game that had The Lake trailing ended as a victory over Fredericksburg.

Team 3rd Quarter Score Pts Scored 4th Quarter End Result
Wimberley 20-10 Hawks 2-14 Favor Texans 21-24 Loss
La Grange 48-23 Hawks 13-00 Favor Hawks 61-23 Win
Beeville 43-28 Hawks 3-07 Favor Beeville 46-35 Win
Jourdanton 24-24 Tie 0-14 Favor Jourdanton 24-38 Loss
Blanco 20-20 Tie 20-21 Favor Blanco 40-41 Loss OT
Austin LBJ 14-13 Hawks 0-08 Favor LBJ 14-21 Loss
Fredericksburg 12-14 Billies 8-00 Favor Hawks 20-14 Win
Burnet 21-16 Hawks 7-00 Favor Hawks 28-16 Win
La Vernia 35-20 Hawks 13-07 Favor Hawks 48-27 Win
Calallen 31-21 Hawks 0-16 Favor Calallen 31-37 Loss

Those results show a break-down by all three facets of a game. Defense could not make a stop or the offense could not score enough to put teams away.

A fumble here or a penalty there could be added in for those outcomes coming up short too.

                  Go Hawks Win District!!

On a positive sway, how bout how well this Hawk group was able to control those first 3 quarters but that last period was won by the opposition. Average Points: Hawks 6.5 Opposition 8.7

Razor thin problems that will need to be addressed for the upcoming campaign, but certainly not a wall too high to climb and conquer.

A schedule that is loaded with good schools which should test just how good this year’s group of players will perform.

Canyon Lake has 5 of their first 6 contest pitted against ranked opponents using the Texas Football Magazine’s rendition.

Two ranked 5A schools (Georgetown East View & Alamo Heights), the always tough Wimberley and Blanco schools and a rematch at Austin LBJ with a 5th place ranking entering this years schedule.

The Hawks were 3-2 in district play and those two losses were by a combined 13 points in battles that were decided in that final 12 minutes.

                         Let’s Go Hawks!!

Lampasas will be an away contest for a team that lost the majority of their team with that headliner 4 year QB Ace Whitehead being a tough act for that next Badger team to replicate.

The Covid season had CL with just 3 home games and the rest either on an opponent’s back yard or a neutral site.

Canyon Lake will start their exhibition this Friday in Cuero and then the next week in Elgin just east of Austin.

The Lake will have two areas that will be watched closely being the Quarterback and Offensive Line positions. How the Hawks fill those holes will go a long way in how this year’s team will perform.

Special Teams has Dalton Stanley returning for extra points and field goals and another replacement needed for a punter with the loss of Punter Tyler Pauly.

A new Offensive Coordinator in Coach Bill Greene will be taking the reins from Coach Troy Moses who is now a head coach for Nixon-Smiley this season.

Defensively. the Hawks, will have 8 returning players as well as a plethora of players from last year’s District Champion’s Junior Varsity squad.

Can your Hawks solve those final 12 minutes in regulation this year? That is a major question that can be answered as practice continues for the next weeks before the curtain is drawn for the Wimberley opening contest.

A guess that the UIL will not grant a 3 quarter contests this season so a different mind-set will be imperative for this year’s squad for that long playoff run.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
