Coaches Corner with Defensive Coordinator Brian Hooper

Hawk Defense will be pressed facing a tough offensive Texan team.

The ReSporter: Will this year’s Defense be 7 points better per game? What would need to happen to accomplish this feat?

                  Beat Wimberley!!

Coach Hooper: “We have a good chance to improve our overall defense. Our goal is to not give up more than 17 points along with a 4th quarter shutout. We feel like if we do those two things, we have a great chance to win.”

The ReSporter: Have a lot of returning on defense what is the strength and why?

Coach Hooper: “We have some spots to fill but like you said we have experience and hopefully more depth on Defense.  Our front six is led by Kolten Ramey, who is going to be a 3 yearr Starter.  He will be fun to watch along with Jeremy Greene, Brock Coburn, and Kyle Herber to name a few.  Hopefully, it will be tough to run the ball on us.”

The ReSporter: What part of this year’s defense that might take a little longer to jell? And why?

Coach Hooper: “I think it’s usually tougher for the secondary to jell.  There is so much they have to learn. We put a lot on those guys.    I’m excited to see their leadership and their improvement from last year.”

The ReSporter: The team gave up an average of 322 yards per game last year, what total per game would you like this season that would give you a smile and a Hawk win?

              Let’s Hit Em Hard Hawks!

Coach Hooper “Our goal is to limit the offense to 250.  If we are around that number we should be in good shape.”

The ReSporter:: Canyon Lake was a +3 on turnover ratio, what is a number you look for per game that would give CL a good chance for a victory?

Coach Hooper: “We talk about takeaways constantly.  This is something we have to improve on from last year.  We want 3+ takeaways.”

The ReSporter: The defense held opposing offenses to 38% on 3rd down conversions, what would need to happen to have that number lowered this year?

Coach Hooper: “We have to do better on 1st down. We want to get the offense behind the chains and out of rhythm.  We have to execute at a high level especially on 3rd down.”

The ReSporter: Depth to start the season is plentiful. How does this season’s depth compare to previous teams?

Coach Hooper: “Our D-line has more depth than years past.  We will have multiple guys that we feel can make a big impact on the game.”

The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and good luck against Wimberley and Go Hawks!!
