Hawk Freshman Have More Bullets in Win over Patriots, 54-52
Hawk Freshman win over East View Patriots was a Wild West shoot out, 54-52 taking their 2nd win of the season.
Canyon Lake had 10 drives and scored on 8 of those opportunities with their last possession having CL draining 4:33 time on the clock for a two point win that had a combined 106 points scored.
The Home team had a lead just once when Rainey caught a 32 yard pass and score with 2 minutes remaining in that opening period. Rainey and the Patriot’s Quarterback were the only players to score and both scored from 32 yards or more except for a quarterback sneak that scored the first EV touchdown.
That was followed with a 32 yard pass play mentioned earlier and then the rest were long range scores.
> 78 yard run > 38 yard run > 50 yard pass > 70 yard run > 90 yard pass
Canyon Lake was no slouch on their offensive side either, with two running backs, Carter Williams (176 yards on 10 carries) and Kaiden Lewis (119 yards on 12 carries) topping the 100 yard barrier with James Garza (99 yards) and Grant Snowden (55 yards) tough yards up the middle being more than enough damage done to the Patriots in staying ahead down the stretch for the Hawks.
After CL was held without a score on their 3rd possession the Hawk Offense would put the pedal to the metal through their final hand-off. Of the 49 rushing attempts, The Lake was only stopped behind the line of scrimmage once on a 4th down try that netted -1 yards on that drive mentioned earlier.
The Hawk defense had it’s moments with a fumble recovery and interception that would be the difference in allowing Canyon Lake a chance to score enough for this victory.
Quarterback Ryder Hopper found a wide open Lewis after CL recovered EV’s fumble for 59 yards which elevated CL’s lead to 12 points while scoring 20 points in that 2nd quarter for a 10 point lead going into halftime, 32-22.
In that 2nd Half, each school scored on all their possessions except for Canyon Lake’s last drive that finished with a first down on East View’s 13 yard line as the Hawks went into their victory formation to run out those last seconds for this shoot-out win.
Canyon Lake was not without some drama when starting QB Hopper was being helped to the sideline late in the 2nd quarter. That had Tanner Bartow called into action for the first time this season and his performance was flawless as CL did not miss a beat and continued to pound the Patriots’ defense to the tune up over 9 yards per rushing attempt.
“I was kind of nervous but after my first drive that feeling wore off,” Bartow said without wavering. “I started feeling more confident and then it fell like dominoes from there on.”
The Lake’s offensive line performance was lethal at the point of attack allowing the running backs enough space in moving down hill throughout this battle.
“I just stayed low, drove and kept pushing,” Center Michael Anderson said when asked what it was like facing much bigger defensive lineman. “We have been working together and we know we would just have to score on them.”
“It takes a lot of conditioning and we just got mad and hit them hard,” Offensive Lineman Evan Poole said while diving into the deep end. “This next game will be fun and we will have a good week starting tomorrow and will be ready to be physical.”
Kaiden Lewis finished the game with 178 total yards from scrimmage while scoring 2 times during this wild contest.
“Our offensive line blocking was good and I just found the open holes and ran through them,” Lewis said while being surrounded by his teammates.
On what was the mindset of the team after trailing early in the 2nd quarter, “We knew we had to get back into the game and knew it would not be the same.”
It wasn’t the same when the Hawk team would prove they could win using a wrecking ball offense who will now start preparing for Alamo Heights at the Hawk Nest this coming Thursday.
Time to go get more bullets for next weeks game!
Way to Go Hawks!!
