Canyon Lake has 3 schools that have graced their schedule since that first kick-off 14 years ago and Blanco was that first opponent and the Hawks were on the receiving end of a scorching (63-0) loss.
Through the years, The Lake, has compiled a one game advantage over a school that is a little over 3 times smaller than Canyon Lake High School.
That has not stopped this upstart team from playing and winning their share of battles through the years regardless the difference in size.
Last year’s game was a thriller for our friends on the Blanco river after a Hawk loss in an overtime affair, 41-40. The Panthers enter this game with a 2-3 record and have won 2 of their last 3 contests.
Get ready to see a lot of Devin #5 and Nathan #2 Newsome as this dual has a combined 531 yards rushing and Devon has been under center this season too.
Blanco is primarily a run oriented team with 1375 rushing yardage compared to 171 yards through the air. In fact, CL’s 46 yards passing average per game is 12 more than these Panthers average.
That will give you an idea that this contest might not last long with rushing plays being a preference which might give the family enough time to get an order of fries and burger at the Canyon City Grill after the game.
Blanco does average a respectable 8 yards per rushing attempt and Nathan Newsome leads the team with 7 touchdowns.
Canyon Lake has struggled offensively especially in the second half and that will need to change for your Hawks to make some noise in district play. This being the final non-district game will have CL needing to go into district with some confidence with their first game against an undefeated Austin LBJ team that is ranked #3 in the State right now and have been a Top 5 team all season long.
CL’s defense should be ready after giving up 38 points to Alamo Heights two weeks ago. Those Mules are undefeated and before that loss, Wimberley (20 points) led with scoring against The Lake.
The ole adage of. throwing the records out the window when this game starts, has been a truism as there has been 7 games decided by 10 or less points. This game is always a circle on the calendar for Blanco and this Panther team would like nothing more than giving the Hawks another loss.
Go Hawks!!
