Volleyball: Coaches Corner with Kim Clemons
The ReSporter caught up with Head Volleyball’s Coach Kim Clemons for some volleyball talk.
The ReSporter: Hello Coach, give us an idea of your thoughts as you go into the next two weeks before district gets going.
Coach Clemons: “We need to work on our passing as we are averaging 1.7 right now.”
The ReSporter: What does that number mean for the novices in this world?
Coach Clemons: “We have a 3 point system that when a player makes a pass and gets a 3 then that means the pass allowed our team to have 3 chances for a score for the set. A pass with a 2 rating gives us two good chances for a score and so on.”
The ReSporter: What is an average you are looking for in order to have a team that can make the playoffs?
Coach Clemons: “I would like to see a 1.9 or 2..0 or above average in helping us to reach that goal.”
The ReSporter: What happened in your recent battle with Blanco?
Coach Clemons: “We were flat last Friday….our whole routine from pre-game on was off. We had some good passes but we could not put the ball away…I was home in quarantine and it was the first time I have ever missed a game since coaching and that might have been a factor.”
The ReSporter: Compare where the team is this year to last season’s group.
Coach Clemons: “This team is so different compared to last year’s. We have a good bunch of players but last season was a first on many levels with Covid and not knowing what to do and now a year has past and we have a better handle of all the protocols.”
The ReSporter: Where is the team based on how your rotation might work?
Coach Clemons: “We have a good idea of who needs to be on the floor and we have more options as many of the players have had to play different positions which will help as the season goes. Hannah (Harrison) again had to move to front after Claire (Schroeder) had to quarantine. This team is at a better place emotionally because things are more normal. We will have our challenges and we will have to be prepared\\ but we have less anxiety.”
The ReSporter: Give us an idea of what you know of this year’s district.
Coach Clemons: “Boerne is good with most of their players back from last year. Wimberley did lose some players but their best player is still there and they will be hard to beat because they can move her anywhere on the court. She already has a scholarship. Fredericksburg has been up and down as well as Bandera and I have not seen anything on Davenport.”
The ReSporter: What will CL need to do to compete for a playoff spot?
Coach Clemons: “We will need to be more consistent and upping our offense, if we can get more hits out of our middle then we have a good shot if we can open up our offense and get our shot down.”
The ReSporter: Give us your thoughts on this year’s Sub-Varsity Teams.
Coach Clemons: “They have a lot of potential and they keep raising their level of play. Our Coaches have done a job in getting a huge amount of growth from this years group. They are speeding up their game and our very coachable.”
The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and good luck as the district season approaches and Go Hawks!!
