Canyon Lake Qualified 2 Runners for Region in Corpus
Canyon Lake Cross Country is not a Hawk sport that has exuded a lot of awards throughout the years of this sport.
This past week, The Lake, had two runners that qualified for a Regional round that is next on the docket.
Each district qualifies teams and then if their are any individuals on a team that does not qualify will then have a chance of participating for an individual award.
CL had two runners that qualified with Cadence Patterson for the girl’s team and Alek Villavicencio for the boys.
The Hawks fielded their first full team of ladies this year which will continue to improve as each year continues.
“The boys battled hard,” Head Coach Cody Schroeder stated. “I’m super proud of the season…we had a full 7 runners for both Varsity Boys and Girls Teams and a runner in each JV run.”
The ReSporter was able to get thoughts from both athletes.
Cadence Patterson (2nd place) and Alek Villavicencio (8th place) will be running on Monday morning in Corpus Christi.
Sophomore Patterson finished with a time of 12:18 while Villavicencio ran an 18:16 with hopes of breaking down those numbers in Corpus Christi.
“In August, I was excited for the start of a new season and I had been following a training regimen for six months leading up to the first meet,” Ms. Patterson started. “My goal has been to have the opportunity fo compete at the state level this year and I have focused on being present, training smart, and staying healthy in order to keep advancing.”
On what are some of the nuances for Cross Country, “This sport is a constant rollercoaster, but by centering my faith in God and focusing on my future aspirations, I am able to come to practice everyday with a positive outlook.”
What do you think by advancing to this stage will or can do for the team? I value the time I have spent with my team members, putting in the work every morning, constantly encouraging one another, and ultimately forming lasting friendships through this amazing sport.”
That was certainly the case for a team that had 4 other ladies able to have their personal best time in the District 28-4A meet.
Personal Records:
Saige Childers 13:52
Hannah Hammer 13:58
Avery Hime 14:13
Patterson continued, “I am extremely thankful to be in this position and I hope to inspire other athletes to come out and run and to grow the cross country family at CLHS. Cross country is a sport that requires endurance and immense mental strength but was run is an opportunity to challenge yourself and to raise the bar higher.”
Patterson as a Freshman last year has already set some times that has her ranked 1st in the 1600 (5:45:26) and 3200 (12:16.89) meter events.
For her 3200 time, Patterson beat Mariah Ellis’ record run by 29 seconds.
Villavicencio recalled his time at district, “I was running pretty slow and was a little annoyed about it…my goal was to PR from last year and beat the JROTC record.”
Villavicencio continued when asked what he would do different knowing how this year finished, “My goal was met and what I would change to make those goals better is start training earlier.”
“I feel honored that I made it to Regionals,” Villavicencio crossed the finish tape. “Cross country has helped me and can help anyone to stay in shape and build endurance.”
CLHS will have two athletes to be proud of as these two will continue their season and Way to Go Hawks (Literally)!!
