CL Hawks Take Care of Business in Win over Taylor, 39-17.

Running Back #25 Bade Holland jumping into action in win over Taylor, 39-17

The Canyon Lake Hawks took care of business after scoring 33 points in the first half and beating the Taylor Ducks, 39-17.

                    Let’s Go Hawks!!

“We have to eliminate penalties,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “I was proud of our element of play and we will have to gear up and be ready for a good Fredericksburg team.”

The win evens The Lake’s district record with 3 more weeks still remaining and a chance to secure a 2nd seed with an outside chance of tying Austin LBJ if the #1 ranked Jaguars were to slip up.

That scenario might be hard to come about as CL would need to sweep their remaining games and hope for two losses by LBJ since a set back by Canyon Lake earlier has Austin needing more than one loss.

With a loss, the Hawks would need a victory over the team that beat Austin forcing a 3 way tie.

On this night, Shayne Moss had Canyon Lake starting fast with a first play 53 yard run and then upping that run ending the game with a 68 yard touchdown scamper that turned into a 25.1 yards per carry. That ranks second in Hawk annals with Trenton Lorett having a 45.5 yards per carry in a win over Austin Reagan during the 2017 campaign.

“It felt good to get some runs,” Moss said while sitting on a rolling stone. “We were able to get everyone in the game and as a team we have to appreciate getting this win and now we will need to put in the work and get into the right mind-set for next week.”

Moss continued, “Freddie is a tough team and they were last year but we will just come in and just grind it out and not fear them.”

Shayne Moss, Hayden Baker, and Hunter Anderson making a mark in Taylor win.

After that Moss 53 yard run it took two more plays when Helijah Johnson scored from 23 yards out and a Hawk lead that would not be threatened the remainder of this battle.

With a Hawk Defensive stop on Taylor’s first series, Canyon Lake would continue their onslaught, this time gobbling up 94 yards (thanks to penalties) that was capped off when Jeremy Greene scored from 15 yards out.

Taylor would show some life in their next possession when they had Jarvis Anderson doing a tight rope act down the sideline covering 37 yards and their only offensive touchdown in this game.

Canyon Lake would answer with a 7 play drive covering 58 yards with two explosive plays. 1) QB Hunter Anderson started with a 36 yard run that was followed by, 2) a Moss jet sweep covering 22 yards. Bates would be the Hawk with the ball for this TD as there was 5 different players that scored on this windy night.

                         Let’s Go Hawks!!

The Hawks would reach a 20 point lead after an interception by Joe Gonzales (2nd of the year) that had CL needing just 3 plays with their only completed pass on this night to Ethan Maxson for 24 yards before Moss scored from 7 yards out, 27-7.

After a Duck field goal, Canyon Lake, would use a Hunter Anderson quarterback run for 33 yards and 23 point halftime lead, 33-10.

“That was a called play and Sonny (Bentley) got a good block,” Hunter Anderson recalled.

On facing the Billies next week? “They are really tough and they return some good players so we will have a lot of work and watching film.”

Canyon Lake’s defense clamped down on these Ducks having Kolten Ramey continuing his year in opponent’s back field and was helped on this night by Adrian Duque and Hayden Baker applying some lethal wrecking balls in this win.

“We continued to play hard and physical,” Baker said without regret. “Our Coaches were making some amazing calls for us.”

On what the team does with a home game with an always tough Freddie team, “Our defense will have to be really physical and match their caliber and mindset.”

A 22 point win that can boost confidence as more district games come calling. If CL can run the table then at worst a 2nd seed finish would help in starting post-season play.

The Hawks will be home this Friday when they face Fredericksburg needing a win to continue to stay close to Lampasas and Austin LBJ in district play.
