CLJV Dominate Blanco JV, 24-6
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity controlled both sides of the line in win over the Blanco Panthers JV, 24-06.
The Panthers only score came as a result of two consecutive roughing the punter penalties that sustained a Blanco drive that took 17 plays and an anemic 2.8 yards per snap as the Hawk defense allowed 9 total first downs with two of those coming from those penalties.
Two lost fumbles by Canyon Lake were more gifts the Hawks gave to the home team that could have made this score even more lopsided.
After holding Blanco to one first down and a punt to start the game it took 3 plays for a Hawk score when QB Steven Crowder found a wide open Tyler Balderas in the end zone giving CLJV a lead that would not be threatened.
Linebacker Wyatt Bates kept the Panther offense subdued with a tackle behind the line that had The Lake responding with a Caden Rodriguez (102 yards) 45 yard TD run and a Hawk, 16-0 lead going into halftime.
The Hawks would receive the ball to start the 2nd half but their 2nd fumble in the game at midfield led to a Blanco 17 play drive and score but CL’s defense nullifyed their 2 point conversion try which still had Canyon Lake with a 2 score lead, 16-6.
The Lake would dominate the final period that had some more personel providing Hawk depth and final score in a 24.6 win and having to start their next contest in a district battle at home against Austin LBJ.
Trevin Cutrer was able to disrupt several plays with his biggest play resulting in a 10 yard sack of the Panther QB, “I just pursued the ball and on that play tried to get to the outside of their line.”
“I was just kept checking and keeping my eye on the ball and when I see where it is then I just pursue,” Cutrer said succinctly.
CLJV’s Defense was in lock-down mode for most of this game that was able to control the line of scrimmage. Oscar Aguilar was another Hawk that helped in stopping this Panther team.
“The Coaches helped us imagine what to expect and after allowing their touchdown we knew how to bounce back from our mistakes,” Aguilar said with eloquence.
On how the team will enter into district play after this win, “We will work on our physicality and mentally and go get them!”
That last Hawk offensive drive went for 70 yards and half of that output came when Chevy Standifer was able to get back into the game.
“I was asking Coach if I could enter the game in the 4th quarter,” Standifer said. “I had to sit out the first part of the game because I missed the Monday practice and I told Coach that I was fresh.”
On what was going in Standifer’s thoughts while watching the game from the sideline, “I was just wanting to get in so I could hit and run someone over.”
On how CLJV will enter district play at home against Austin LBJ next Thursday, “Next week I will not miss any practices and I will want to play the whole game.”
Way to Go Hawks!!
