CLJV Flew Over the Jaguars With Dominating Win, 35-22

CLJV defense was instrumental in win over Jaguars, 35-22.

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity raced out to a, 29-7 first half lead and then held on for a 13 point win and first conquest of their district season.

                     Let’s Go Hawk!!

CLJV started with their defense that forced a fumble on LBJ’s 3rd down try that allowed the Hawks needing just two plays for a score from 12 yards out when Caden Rodriguez waltzed 5 yards untouched for that first score.

Austin LBJ would respond with a 78 yard drive that was capped off with a 32 yard quarterback run and tied score, 6-6.

That tie would last 15 seconds before Rodriguez’s next rushing play going 49 yards and a Hawk lead that would be enough for this win.

Rodriguez finished the game with 108* yards with an asterisk that The ReSporter will finish at the end of this article.

“We were doing our job perfectly,” Rodriguez said in response to how well the team played to start the game. “We will need to put teams away as we continue this season and finish the second half.”

Back to the game with another Jaguar lost fumble that had the Hawks JV needing to traverse 32 yards and that was finished when Cole Cason scored from 9 yards out after being a fixture on the sideline since the first game in 2020 after Cason was hurt on a 2 yard scoring play. This touchdown had this young man scoring at a 67% rate after his two scoring runs was sandwiched with a somersault no gainer. His second running play had Cason skirting to the home side of the field where he burrowed over a Jaguar for the score, 22-6.

On what Cason was thinking on his first run. “I just tried to keep my feet moving and try to do my best by following my blockers.”

After getting into the game on both sides of the ball, which side did you like best tonight? “Defense,” Cason said. “I played two series on defense and had 5 tackles and it was more fun doing the hitting instead of getting hit.”

                        Let’s Go Hawks!!

CLJV defense would force a punt on LBJ’s next possession and a slot-t dream come true after a 13 play 75 yard drive when Tristan Roberts scored from 8 yards out and a 23 point lead, 29-6.

The Lake had dominated up to this point with a 168 to 83 yard lead that ended the first half of play. After LBJ’s 78 yard scoring drive the Hawk defense allowed 4 positive yards during those first two quarters.

Dylan Wunderlich was one of those defensive players that helped squash these Jaguars, “I would give our defense an 8 (out of 10) as our line was getting a good push which helped make the plays.”

What does this game do in preparation for next week, “We will need to have a great week of practice but we adjusted our angles after that first run and that allowed us to play better… but we will still need to work on our mistakes and play our game.”

Caden Rodriguez and Dylan Wunderlich look for more district wins this year.

On the second half, the Hawks, started where they left off except having penalties after reaching the Jaguars 10 yard line but the Hawks used a Robert’s tackle for loss on a 4th down try that The Lake scored their final TD with two consecutive Justin Abbott runs the last from 6 yards out running the lead to, 35-6.

It would be all LBJ after that Hawk score as Canyon Lake will now ready themselves when Taylor comes calling (use a duck caller here) next Thursday.

**This game would not end when the Hawks formed the victory formation which had the Jaguars not ready to take their bus ride home and called a timeout after each snap.

That had Rodriguez and the Hawk offense taking the final snap by trying to take 10 seconds off the clock so these visitors would not be able to send their offense to the field again.

The Hawk snap had several players taking the ball before Rodriguez picking the ball up and running around until he was tackled with the Scoreboard Clock reading, 0:00. That final play would usually count as a play against the player (Rodriguez) that ran around like he was playing a duck—duck—-goose game.

Regardless, The ReSporter did not subtract that yardage towards his 108 yards gained on this night.

Way to Go Hawks!!
