Hawks Unleash their Wrath on Billies with, 38-30 Win.

CL Hawks continue cinderella season with 6th win of year after beating Billies, 38-30.

Canyon Lake Freshman ran (and a few passes) their record to 3-0 in district and 6-2 for the season after rushing out to a big lead to hold on for this 8 point win over Fredericksburg, 38-30.

                    Let’s Go Hawks!!

Winning has become contagious for this class as they reached 6 wins with two more weeks of battles left. During those Middle School years this group of players totaled 5 victories during their two year stint at Mountain Valley. Those year’s have passed and now CL can see if they can continue this season with two more wins.

For this victory over the Billies, CLJV had some major set-backs with touchdowns being called back on penalties while defensively stopping a drive only to have a penalty that would award a first down to the Home team after being stuffed on their 4th down try.

Suffice to say, you could deduce that this Hawk Team got hot under their collar and produced some not seen before antics that were made to seem routine.

Four interceptions was one anomaly on the defensive side of the ball and then CL’s offense went down the field to end the first half in record time by using the forward pass. Usually for a slot-t offense the pass is used as a surprise but this set of downs was successful even when everyone in the stadium knew a pass would be thrown.

It took some good passing skills from QB Ryder Hopper combined with some sure hands with Kaiden Lewis and Carter Williams.

                         Go Far Hawks!!

This drive was set up after James Garza intercepted a ball on the Hawks 20 yard line to stop a scoring opportunity that if successful would have made the score, 23-14 in favor of Fredericksburg going into Halftime.

The Lake JV started this 80 yard drive with a ho-hum 2 yard run by Garza giving the fans an idea that the team might be content in running out the clock while licking their wounds in being down, 16-14.

Williams was the next runner with an opportunity on a jet sweep for 13 yards but the clock was approaching one minute and still needing 65 yards for a score.

Then the next 4 plays would catch, air raid status, with a 23 yard strike to Lewis who continued to make his grabs highlight real worthy. Next pass went to Williams for a 25 yard strike which had the Hawk’s next snap on the Billies 17 yard line.

QB Hopper was dialed in with his passes during the run and gun minute before half, “I got some great blocking and that gave me enough time to get my passes off and our wide-receivers did great.”

Carter Williams, Ryder Hopper and EJ Nevarez pitch in for another win beating Billies.

Want some intrigue? A offensive movement penalty pushed CLJV to the Billies 22 yard line when a screen play, that was introduced in practice this week, came in handy when Williams caught the pass and danced to the end-zone with no time left on the clock. That strike would give CL a, 22-16 lead after Garza ran in his point after.

On what Hopper’s thinking was when he heard that the Coaches had called for the screen play, “I was surprised at first but that play worked to perfection.”

This contest did have a back and force action when CL started this game with a one play 71 yard run by Garza after starting this play up the middle that had two Billies with a chance for a take down, but that last missed tackle had Garza sprinting to the goal line and Hawk lead, 6-0. Garza’s run did show some get up and go when he reached the Freddie’s 30 yard line.

Cross Country Coach Schroeder met Garza in the end-zone to sign him up for his CC team next August.

Freddie would respond with a 67 yard drive that took 7 plays and a lead after being successful on their PAT, 7-6.

CL would get back a lead going 69 yards that had a 49 yard pass from Hopper to Williams and Hawk lead, 14-7.

An interception stopped FHS next drive but The Lake offense could not capitalize and had one of their two punts in this contest.

With a short 32 yard drive, Fredericksburg would tie the game on a 32 yard pass play with still over 4 minutes remaining.

Williams had a 92 yard run that was called back because of a holding infraction which would become a safety and had the Billie’s leading, 16-14.

Willams was Mr. Everything on this day with 75 yards rushing, 98 yards receiving and then being able to add 2 more interceptions that totals 7 this season.

On what Williams is most excited about when asked, which of those attributes he takes the most pride in, “I like the interceptions because a turnover is better because it turns the ball back to the offense which gives us a chance to score.”

Another interception, this time by Lewis which set up that passing attack for the final touchdown during that first half, 22-16.

Momentum was not doused during the halftime talks when Williams’ 2nd interception on this game came on Freddie’s second play from scrimmage and 51 yards later a Hawk 14 point lead, 30-14.

Another Billie turnover, this time on a fumble that had CL with a Williams 31 yard run and Hawk 22 point lead, 38-16.

                  Let’s Go Hawks!!

Mop-up duty would see the Billies scoring two more times but that final FHS drive would have CL’s Jesiah Rodriguez able to secure the 4th interception in the game and a Hawk win.

CLJV became a different team once those miscues and penalties took their toll while looking at a 2 point deficit while controlling every stat during that first half.

“We got mad and we wanted to gain those yards back,” Williams said. “We were able to turn the tables and didn’t let those calls get to us.”

Defensive Lineman EJ Nevarez was one of several big men that was able to thwart the Billies, “We fought hard because this was a tough game but next week we will do better.”

To close out this battle had some more intrigue when the Hawks were needing two yards for a first but still deep in CL’s territory (23 yard line) had Chris Taber ready to punt but that was not in the cards as Taber tucked the ball and ran 14 yards which allowed Canyon Lake to form their victory formation for another win.

“I wanted to do it,” Taber said. “Coach gave me an option to punt or run for a first and I felt we could get it and it turned out to be easy.”

On what might have happened if this run would have not moved the chains? “He (the Coach) would have run me!!”

The only running at the end of this contest was seeing a reborn Hawk team that now can add to their record of wins in a season with hopes of being District Champions.

That quest will continue next week at home when CL says hello to Lampasas for another battle and chance to continue their turn-a-round season.

Way To Go Hawks!!
