CL Hawks Can’t Punch it In Losing, 28-21

Helijah Johnson getting some tough yards in game against Boerne.

Canyon Lake’s Second Half Doldrums leads to their Bi-District Loss after being outscored, 21 points losing, 28-21.

We’ll Get’em next year Hawks!!

“Boerne has done this type of game this year,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “And we just could not punch it in.”

On thoughts for this senior group of men, “They have been hard working and they played the game the right way. Every year you always feel for these guys and there will only be one champion….but you just hurt for them.”

The Lake had problems all season scoring in those final two quarters with the 3rd stanza being the main culprit totaling 20 points for this year’s campaign. Simple math gives you less than 2 points per game coming out for the second half.

All total, CL averaged one touchdown during those final two quarters which resulted in an early exit in this year’s season.

The Greyhound’s Quarterback, Galloway was a one man show scoring all but one touchdown and accounting for 86% of Boerne’s offense.

CL’s first half was flawless with no turnovers, only 10 yards of penalties, a plus one in the turnover department, and letting their slot-t drain the clock resulting in that 21-7 lead and a chance to put a nail in that proverbial coffin receiving the 2nd half kick-off.

A touchdown on that drive would douse any hope for this 1st seeded team for a chance to continue their post-season.

James Bates finished this night with 201 yards rushing and for his career he stands in 3rd place behind Zach Henshaw and Tanner Faris.

Bates finished with the 10th all-time season rushing accumulating 990 yards while finishing his career topping 200 yards in a game three times trailing Henshaw who had 10 games over that mark.

Shayne Moss, Hayden Baker, and Hunter Anderson look for one more chance next year.

Bates ranks tied for 6th place scoring touchdowns finishing with 23 for his career.

“This was a heartbreaker,” Bates summed up this loss. “We worked our butt off for the last 4 years and still just came up short.”

On what words of wisdom for the underclassmen? “Play with heart!!”

Looking at those stats above should give a good indication that Bates was able to make that a true statement.

Canyon Lake certainly had their chances to tie the game twice coming up short the first time after turning the ball over on downs and after surrendering the ball on downs the Hawks forced a fumble on the Greyhounds next play had CL with the ball on the 24 yard line before a final play interception sealing the game and season.

Seniors Kolten Ramey’s sacks and an Austin Bowers interception and 55 yard return helped with that first half 14 point advantage.

Not capitalizing and losing a 2nd half winnable game will unfortunately be the ending to this year’s team that had so much potential.

Thanks Seniors and GodSpeed.
