CL Hawks Stiff-Arm Their Way to District Championship in 46-6 Win Over Burnet

CANYON LAKE JUNIOR VARSITY DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity finished the season as District 13-4A Division I Champs after thoroughly demolishing the Burnet Bulldogs, 46-6.

          Way to Go District Champs!!

This Hawk team finished the season on a 6 game winning streak that started after losing a last minute battle against the Alamo Heights Mules, 28-26 and sporting a 1-3 record before entering district play. Those other two losses were not good outings with two lethargic efforts in losing their opening game with Wimberley, 27-00 and two games later a lackluster loss to East View, 28-12.

Since those set-backs this JV squad averaged right at 23 point wins for this streak. The Lake JV finished the season scoring 35 points and giving up 12 points during the rampage.

On this clinching finish, this Hawk team controlled every facet of this game after scoring 5 touchdowns before these Bulldogs could find the end-zone. The Hawk response in giving up that one score would have two more TD’s as the ‘Back-Ups’ continued their onslaught in much the same manner the starters had.

A pick-six started this contest when Caden Rodriguez (who scored the first 3 touchdowns) jumped into a weak sideline pass after CL supplied ample pressure from Dylan Wunderlich and Hayden Wilson on the Bulldog QB which resulted into a non-contested 54 yard stroll to the end zone.

“I certainly did not expect that or think that would happen tonight,” Rodriguez said with a surprised look. “I just read the quarterback eyes and his body language and jumped the throw.”

Caden Rodriguez, Jimmy Mendoza, and Trevin Cutrer already thinking bout next year.

Burnet turned the ball over on downs on their next drive and CLJV made short order with a one play two stiff-armed 62 yard run for Rodriguez, 12-0.

Rodriguez would have 98 yards rushing in the first half and finished with 114 for the night.

“I had some great blocks,” what a smart running back should always commend an offensive line. “I had been talking with Trevin’s (Cutrer) Dad when we watch tape of games and he told me that I should use my stiff arm more often and just hit them (would be tacklers) as hard as I can.”

That was the case on this run after using this new found weapon twice for a Rodriguez scoring run.

Canyon Lake’s defense clamped down with a 3 play and punt sequence that had the Hawks setting up shop on the Bulldog’s 40 yard line.

CL’s defense has some large bodies and one of those players is Jimmy Mendoza that is not a starter but contributes during games by bringing it often and Mendoza has helped this year’s defense keep the scoring at a minimum.

“I had many things going on when I came here and Coach Landaddy (Lancaster) brought out the best in me this year,” Mendoza stated. “It just helps me by being here with all these guys.”

                 Way to Go Hawks Go!!

Another defensive Tatoo Artist this season was Trevin Cutrer who had several tackles that left tattoos on opposing players.

“I got the ball more in this game,” the defensive specialist got offensive with a 44 yard rushing game and scoring the last touchdown for this season. “I just go out and hit’em…I just want to hit them like a ghost and run right through them.”

An eloquent way of saying that there had been multiple ghost sightings this season.

The Burnet defense on CL’s next drive would have a first play sack for a loss of 13 yards that would prove to be the only set of downs Canyon Lake would not score after coming up short at Burnet’s 23 yard line.

On the next Burnet drive Carson Reinarz would pounce on a Bulldog fumble on an 8 yard loss that set up a 5 play 25 yard scoring drive that was highlighted by a Trevin Cutrer 18 yard run that was finished off by….guess who? Rodriguez 5 yard run, 20-0 Hawks.

Another 4 down and punt dance routine that  the Bulldogs had perfected and it would result in another Hawk score this time scoring with just 12 seconds left before halftime. A Steven Crowder pass to Tyler Balderas had CLJV in control leading, 26-0.

Canyon Lake would have the ball 3 times in the 2nd Half and started with a ‘Peanut’ play for 43 yards by Justin Abbott, 32-0 on the opening drive.

Next Hawk drive was 7 plays coverting 65 yards that was culminated when Balderas ran it in from 2 yards. Chevy Standifer had his car rumbling and crashing through players for 40 yards before Balderas’ run, 39-6.

One last drive for the game and year had 5 different Hawk runners taking part.

Chevy Standifer 1 run for 5 yards
Tristan Roberts 2 runs for 8 yards
Rand Ahlman 3 runs for 26 yards with one covering 19 yards.
Steven Crowder 1 run on a broken play for a one yard loss.
Trevin Cutrer 2 runs for 26 yards and a touchdown run from 16 yards out.

While the Bulldogs would get mop-up yardage on their last drive that had 41 yards of their 115 total for the game, while the Hawks, were contemplating how they wanted to celebrate as the clock would end the season for a team that had found itself and wishing they could revisit those 3 losses for a redo.

This was the 2nd District Championship in a row for the Junior Varsity and will look for more in the near future!!

Way to GO DISTRICT CHAMPS HAWKS!!
