An early season loss for MVMS to Smithson Valley MS was met with a team that finished on a 6 game winning streak after a blow-out win over a one loss Churchill team by 37 points making a statement that MVMS was the best school by a wide margin.
Depth would be the operative word for Mountain Valley when combining the two team’s records that combines the 8th Grade’s A & B divisions.

“I have never seen a team that had more depth at running back as this team (8B),” Coach Raymond Amaro said with confidence. “We used 8 different players at that running back position today and I would say that the difference between the top and bottom is not much.”
Case and point was watching Jacob Price the last runner to take the rock. Price ran it to the house on a 52 yard run and dance to the end zone. A Dance after seeing a move leaving two opponents looking at each other with nothing but air to catch after a dance move that was pure gold on that touchdown run.
Simply put, one of the best games might be, seeing who would win a game between the 8A vs. 8B teams.
In this contest with a Churchill B squad there was no suspense after seeing MV 8B travel 62 yards using 9 plays with their only 3rd down play on this drive resulting in a 3 yard run by Gavin Baldera for an, 8-0 lead that would never be challenged.
A Churchill Panther team that had just one loss (now two) coming into this game and on their first snap had a 21 yard run. That would be the longest play on this day and that drive would end with a negative run on a 4th down four plays later.
Churchill MS would total just 13 plays entering the 4th period with the Hawks enjoying a 36-0 lead.
Churchill Travails during those 13 plays:
Rushing? 11 plays for 3 yards
Passing ? 1 out of 2 for 7 yards.
Defense….Defense…and some more Defense!!
Mountain Valley’s second drive covered 52 yards and would take 12 plays with two 4th down conversions. The first 11 snaps were runs and then a surprise pass with Reese Pipkin catching a Hayes Holladay throw for a 17 yard touchdown.
A successful onside kick would have another score by the Hawks when Pipkin was the recipient of a half-back pass from Baldera this time for 46 yards and score that was 31 seconds later.
Pipkin was perfect in route running and making Churchill pay with his two catches.
“We have good Coaches,” Pipkin started when asked about how the Hawks handled the Panthers. “Those passes were just right there in my bread basket and I was like…hurry up ball and chop…chop!”
On Pipkin’s thoughts on the season, “We put in a lot of effort and it paid off.”
MV’s next score was a 28 yard fumble return when Ben Parma scooped up the ball and scored for a, 36-0 lead over who used to be tied with MV for 1st in district.
“I was blitzing on the end and I thought that Kahle Bowers would strip the ball from the runner and I was jogging and waiting there and then when he (Bowers) did strip it I knew I had a couple of kids on their team that were close to me so I knew I could beat them and just put on my burners as I saw the end zone get closer and closer.”
After finally allowing a Panther score it was the Hawk’s Price who danced his way for a curtain closing to this season and final score, 43-6.
Price’s only run of the season will have the Coaches wondering if their best rusher might have paid the price.
On the Price run and if he ever made that type of move before? “No, I had practiced it in my back-yard,” said Price is Right. “I faked one way and went the other way and then I started thinking that regardless I was going to get a lot of yards.”
On how MV controlled Churchill, “This was a good year and they were a good team but we had good blockers in this game….. there is a lot of Dog in us!!”
Every facet of this battle had MVMS holding all the ammunition as Churchill would traverse home with empty pockets.
The hardest play on the night was seeing the players hoist the Gatorade and try to find Coach Lee Self who was the recipient of the most gratifying Gatorade bath after starting in the heat of September and now being Crowned The GVAC CHAMPS!!
Way to Go District Champs!!
