Lady Hawks Continue Winning Ways in Wins Over Moore & Randolph

Reece Coburn  taking a shot with Shelby Porter waiting just in case of a miss for a rebound in win over Randolph.

Canyon Lake found themselves in a situation that had happened just once this season after finishing their first quarter as a 4 point deficit to Randolph (11-7). It was one of their three losses in losing to Post during the first tournament in Llano.

         Proud of those Lady Hawks!!

That Post contest was also the last time CL had lost as they notched their 6th straight win in downing Randolph, 45-30.

The Lake finished the first day of action in Johnson City. 2-0 after beating Ingram-Moore for the 3rd time this season. So far, CL has allowed 5.7 points in that opening stanza which has helped in setting the stage for reaching the 10 win plateau just one game off the 2017-18 season which had your Hawks going 3 rounds in the playoffs.

The Ro-Hawks had staked a 9-2 lead with three minutes still remaining in that opening quarter before running a 22-6 score going into halftime. That lead was secured after tying the score at 15 all when Marley Christian found Shelby Porter for an in the paint shot with 3:40 remaining in that 2nd period.

Thirty seconds later Brynne Beck’s two pointer would give Canyon Lake a lead that would not be threatened for the remainder of this contest. The Hawks outscored the Ro-Hawks, 17-4 in taking control in this game.

All but one Hawk scored with Reece Coburn using 4 buckets scoring 9 points and leading in points made.

Mya Vorhis played a monster game corralling 12 rebounds with 6 both offensive and defensive which had three put-backs during critical times in keeping Randolph in check.

Porter matched Vorhis’ 6 offensive rebounds which helped keep CL’s offense in a scoring spree in this win.

                 Way to Go Lady Hawks!!

A Hawk team that is overflowing with freshman used the help of Porter who is a Junior and Sofia George a Sophomore.

“She (Shelby Porter) does so much that does not end up on the stat sheet,” Head Basketball Coach Burleson said.

Games are won by players like Porter as all brick walls need cement to keep that wall up for protection.

“I have gained more confidence and I am playing more aggressively,” Porter said while talking about all the off season work she had since last season. “I played club sports during the Summer and that helped getting me more comfortable.”

On what is the difference between this team and last year’s crew, “We are more in sync and we are still getting to know each other and during game time we are having fun and that helps making us more comfortable….over our practices we have bonded more than ever!!”

George has been the leading scorer this season and has helped in leading the team in steals (37) and stands 3rd in rebounds with 62.

“During the beginning of today’s game we were not focused and the other team (Randolph) started gaining on us and then we just clicked,” George said when asked about CL’s slow start. “We just had to get set and get even which led to our fluidity.”

After wowing The ReSporter with that, fluidity word, George was asked about this team compared to last season playing as a freshman.

Shelby Porter & Sofia George after win against Randolph.

“We are more athletic that last year’s team,” George surmised. “If somebody messes up then we have somebody on this team that can always step in.”

That certainly can be seen when Coach Burleson substitutes 5 at a time without any noticeable difference in the quality of play.

“We have 2 lines where there is not much of a difference,” Coach Burleson assessed. “We are trying to put the girls together to help equal out those two lines. Everything is brand new!!”

Canyon Lake will hope to continue that formula as they finish the JC Tourney with a Noon and a 3pm tip on Saturday.

A young and exciting team that keeps improving as this season matures.

Way to Go Hawks!!
