Lady Hawks Secure 14th Win Over Charlotte, 51-33
Canyon Lake Ladies Basketball ran their record to 14-5 after a dominating 2nd quarter in outscoring Charlotte, 19-8 which secured an 18 point win during their Christmas Break.
Reece Coburn was on her game scoring 24 points with Sophia George joining in with 11 points that led the Hawks in scoring.
“I had been trying to get to 20 (points) for a long time and it was exciting and shocking,” Coburn said after being made aware of how many points she scored in this win during the interview. “This has been a goal of mine.”
A slow start had the Charlotte Trojans with a lead, 3-2 after the first 3 minutes of play as both clubs were finding it hard to find the basket.
CL took the lead and led by 5 points, 11-6 after a Marley Christian basket during the first part of that second period. But the Trojans would erase that lead fighting back to a 1 point deficit, 11-10 when Head Coach Zach Burleson had seen enough in calling a time-out with still over 6 minutes remaining before halftime to make adjustments.
After that little talk, The Lake outscored Charlotte, 17-4 going into halftime which would put a Hawk stamp on this contest.
Coburn unleashed a barrage of points to finish the time-out and scored 8 points while shooting 5 for 7 from the floor and 60% for the game (9-15).
“I have been improving and my confidence is going up!” Coburn said in scoring 40 points in her last two contests.
On where the team is with district looming with the new year, “There are things we still need to work on with our passing and rebounding, but I am hoping we get rolled up for the rest of the season and work on being prepared in our practices.”
The Trojans did outscore CL to open the second half but a dominating defense in that last quarter helped in holding the visitors to 6 points that sealed the deal.
The Lake, had a defense that used their ‘block party’ by swatting away 8 wood-be shots by far the best game in that category.
Mya Vorhis played with foul-trouble during the whole game but was able to finish this battle with two block shots and 6 rebounds all during that second half.
“Yes, those fouls made me able to play my game,” Vorhis recounted.
On how this team will respond when district starts? “We are doing pretty good but we will need to start playing harder and get more rebounds.”
Canyon Lake will have one final battle before the New Year when Ingram-Moore will come to the Hawk Nest this Thursday as those district battles will be coming right around the corner.
The Hawks continue their learning curve as this team is dominated with a freshman crew that continues to show signs of making games more interesting when those seasoned district foes make their appearance on January 7th, 2022.
