CL Hawk’s Softball Finish 6-0 at Navarro Tourney

CL Hawks Sweep through Navarro Tournament with Trophy in hand.

Hawk Softball finished 2nd at the Navarro Tourney after sweeping to a 6-0 tournament record and holding off Poth, 8-6 tor their 7th straight win this year.

                   Let’s GO HAWKS!!

This is the longest win streak for Canyon Lake with their previous streak reaching 5 during their 2012 season. That year the Hawks had a 9-1 record and during the 2017 season CL had a 10 game streak with no losses with a 10 game stretch of, 9-0-1.

This Second Place finish was based on a tie breaker with Pleasanton who came away with the top spot with both teams finishing the tournament undefeated.

Canyon Lake won 3 games on Thursday, 2 games on Friday and finished off this tourney with a win over Poth on Saturday.

Gabby Barnes got the win and save when Rianna Gonzales ran into some trouble and Head Coach Hayley Galloway called on Barnes to return to the circle to finish.

The Hawks entered the 5th inning with an 8-4 advantage but this Pirate team had their first four batters reach base before Barnes entered the frame with what was now a Hawk 3 run lead, 8-5 with no outs recorded.

Poth greeted Barnes with a single that scored a run but a base runner blunder at 3rd base left the Pirates with just two outs.

               Way to Go Lady Hawks!

Barnes then struck out her next batter and fielded the final ground ball getting that final out at first.

Canyon Lake amassed 13 hits in this contest and now sport a team .426 average and an even more impressive .676 team slugging percentage.

One third of CL’s hits (75) have gone for doubles (25) with 4 home-runs and 2 triples thrown in for icing.

Not many holes in the line-up thus far with all the players contributing in some fashion.

Barnes continued her torrid pace with two more hits and has scored 16 times on 18 hits that has had 12 of those going for extra bases. Not a bad week of work when you add her pitching with a 1.46 era while striking out 36 opponents.

Congrats & Way to Go Hawks!!

“I’m just proud of these kids,” Coach Galloway said with all smiles. “Being able to pull out that first win over Westlake has helped set us up with what we are capable of doing since then….but we still have some work to do with our defense and we need to tighten that up!”

Defense does not have a glowing report to start this campaign but more repetition will help solve those shortcomings. For now, offense has carried the week scoring 53 runs on 65 hits and 32 of those being for extra bases.

There are presently 9 players sporting a .333 batting average or higher which has helped cover up for those defensive shortcomings.

CL’s 9th batter is Freshman Alysa Johnson and that spot will usually indicate a batter that struggles with the bat. Johnson presently resides with a .563 batting average with 9 hits and 3 have been for doubles.

“I had been struggling with the bat and had some bad habits,” Johnson remembered. “I am working on gaining more power with technique…..I just want to help benefit the team with my bat and persevere.”

On thoughts as the season continues Johnson answered, “We’re going to win and push through and do what we can!”

Alysa Johnson one of many newcomers for this year’s Hawk Team.

A young team that has not been bashful and with hopes to continue their learning on the job.

Senior Riley Glenn-Millhouse continues to impress with her bat and also plays defense at 2nd base (when Barnes is pitching) and 3rd base (when Gonzales or Long goes to the circle).

On comparing this season to her previous two campaigns, “This has really been fun with these teammates and it is hard to compare to previous teams as those were all good memories,” Glenn-Millhouse recalled. “We are all comfortable with each other and we have a solid line-up and we will continue to do the same thing this next week by getting hyped up and trusting our teammates.”

Canyon Lake will now go to work with a home game against Marble Falls this Tuesday at the Hawk Nest before heading to Llano for their next tournament and seeing if they can turn that 2nd Place to a 1st Place Trophy.”

Way to Go Hawks!!
