Hawk Baseball’s Pre-Season Concludes with Abundance of Pitching
Canyon Lake continued their strong showing from their pitching mound with a methodical 1 hitter that saw 19 Lockhart batters making a deer trace between home plate and their dugout during a Hawk, 7-0 win.
CL now will now commence for a bigger prize this Monday when Gonzales comes to the Hawk Nest for the beginning of a 2022 season.
Pitching was dominant for all 4 pre-season scrimmages and this Lockhart finale had CL pitchers finish the 4 game stretch with 68 strikeouts in their 33 innings of play. That comes out to a 69% chance of punching a would be batter just holding their bat on their trek back to the dugout..
“Pitching is where it should be….we have depth,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla commented. “Hopefully we can get all 12 and not 9 to get hits. We will see this Monday.”
CL’s schedule has some marquee teams like Calallen/Dripping Springs to name a few, “Yes, our schedule got tougher and we will have to prove ourselves!”
The Lockhart Lions were lackadaisical in this scrimmage as their coaches were on a, just get out of town without injuries mantra, since their district schedule starts next week.
The Hawks pitching did not miss a beat allowing a lead-off hit and then seeing Catcher Chase Anderson erase that threat on an attempted steal. There would be two walks for the rest of this night while CL’s infield played catch after each K.
Sophomore Luke Roskin started on the mound after allowing a base hit, turned on an array of deliveries to the Lions and the only damage coming as a pop-out to Short-Stop Hayden Baker.
“I just want to make the Top 3 in the rotation and just help the team out,” Sophomore Roskin said in response for his hopes this season.
Roskin was the only pitcher during these scrimmages to not walk a batter and had two batter’s that reached a 3-2 count, “I don’t back down and I just focus and make the pitch.”
On how he approaches his games, “I just make sure that I am on the same page and see what is working or not working and talk with Coach (Escamilla).”
Next up was Griffen Williams’ striking out the side with one walk thrown in to keep things interesting. The damage for the Lions was a fly-out to Right Fielder Jeremy Greene.
Tanner Schultz struck out the side his first inning before giving up his first walk of the pre-season and his next inning with the only damage being a pop-up to the pitcher’s mound.
Baker would be on tap for those final two innings and he started by issuing a walk before striking out the side. The damage for Baker? A pop-out to shortstop Brayden Welch and ground out to 2nd baseman Travis Parma.
Offensively, Canyon Lake still seemed to be in a daze with Hunter Anderson producing a double but was left stranded.
The Hawk runs came from any number of the Lion pitcher’s (and there was a lot) giving up walks and that occasional hit.
Ho-Hum kind of evening but that will change when upcoming teams will have more urgency when that curtain is raised.
An incredible 0.42 earned run average can be taken the bank for a good cash reward and if the Hawks can continue that showing from their mound then Canyon Lake’s Security Bank will need to order more Brink’s Trucks for bigger pay-outs.
Gonzales is a Monday game and a chance to see this Hawk club preparing to make it past the 3rd Round during their next post-season.
Go High Hawks!!
