Hawk’s Baseball Duplicates Scrimmage with, 10-2 Win over Badgers

Pitching continues to dominate as Hunter Anderson is one of 5 pitchers with a below 2 run era after two scrimmages.

Canyon Lake Baseball continued their dominating pre-season after blowing Lampasas all around the diamond in a 9 inning display of superior pitching, 10-2.

Winds gusting up to 35 miles an hour from the north was a contributing factor in giving the players a chance to play in a scenario that might be evident during the season. (This is Texas…so you know it will happen again.)

So far in the past two scrimmages with Hondo and the Badgers, the Hawks pitching staff has struck out 33 players in 19 innings of work. That compares with issuing 6 base on balls with the most innings worked per outing being 2 innings. Both games were, 10-2 outcomes.

In The Lake’s scrimmage with Lampasas there were 5 pitchers used who struck out 15 Badgers out of a possible 27 outs. In their previous outing with Hondo, a game that was 7 innings had 4 pitchers combining to strike out 18 Owls.

Those type of numbers has produced just two earned runs and a sparkling 0.89 era thus far with two more scrimmages this week.

Burnet (Monday) and Lockhart (Friday) will be home game that will give fans a chance to see if this year’s team can get a repeat in defending their District 28-4A Championship. That feat has not been done by any Hawk team.

“Our pitching is ahead of our hitting as it should be, Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “Our guys are throwing strikes early in the count. We are blessed with quality pitching depth.”

Pitching will usually trump batting early in a season but having a staff not walking or hitting batters certainly reduces chances for errors and having anyone on base if an opponent is able to get a hit.

“Our bats are having a slow start, Coach Escamilla said. “We need to make a better transition to situational hitting. We need to do a better job producing quality at bats.”

The Hawks presently have a team .283 batting average and producing 16 walks has helped coax an impressive .461 on base percentage.

Suffice to say that the two opponents were not loaded with as many good pitchers which will result in allowing multiple walks. In the Badger scrimmage, Canyon Lake, also had 5 batters hit by pitch which helped in keeping innings alive with scoring opportunities.

Coach Escamilla angst on the offensive side was realizing when CL left 12 players on base which underlines that situational hitting deficiency from those Hawk bats.

Of the 20 players that have come to bat, the Hawks, have had every player reach base which bodes well and can make the Coaches having a good problem of picking who will start when the season starts which will be a week from Monday at home against Gonzales.

Baseball has 3 elements that will be paramount on those potential starting players as pitching and fielding will be added to that batting element.

Pitching has done well, so far, so that leaves one intangible for playing time which might come from how well these players are with their glove.

That will help highlight that other intangible, when pitchers don’t strikeout a player, which will give other players besides the catcher for fielding an out.

Good Problems to have with two more exams this Monday and Friday while the Hawk Nation waits for those grading results next week.
