Hawk’s Softball Upsets Austin Westlake to Start Season, 4-3

Former Assistant Coach Elizabeth Carter reunites with (L-R) Madison Hartman, Gabby Barnes and Maddie DeLeon.

Canyon Lake Softball started their season with an upset win over Austin Westlake, 4-3.

                 Way to GO HAWKS!!

Some late inning hitting had CL scoring 2 runs to tie the score in the 7th inning that set up what would be the winning run in extra innings, on Gabby Barnes’ 3rd double on this night, driving in Adrianna Teutsch who reached base on the only walk issued by the Westlake pitcher.

This proved to be a good opening season win for Canyon Lake with a Navarro Tourney starting Thursday.

“Starting the season with a win is always nice, but I think starting with a win like that will be big for our confidence moving forward,” Head Coach Hayley Galloway gleamed.” Being down to their last three outs and fighting to get back into the game says a lot about the heart and guts that these girls have. Playing games like that will benefit us as we get deeper into the season.”

Westlake was able to draw first blood when they used some Hawk errors to score 3 runs during the third inning. With one out that was sandwiched by a hit batsman and walk on a bunt error was able to score two runs and one out later a WL scored on a double scored on what would be their final run.

Barnes started the next inning with a double and scored on a steal of home when Riley Glenn-Millhouse (reached base on a single) and then stole 2nd base.

The next two innings settled in a pitching match-up until CL was able to tie the game with a 2 run 7th inning.

                 Way to Go Hawks!!

“Early in the game we struggled to make adjustments at the plate,” Coach Galloway stated. “I think everyone was a little nervous and excited for their first game of the year. The third time through the line-up is when we were able to settle down and be more selective with the pitches they were swinging at.”

Glenn-Millhouse started the 7th inning with her second hit and after her 2nd stolen base scored on a single off the bat of Rianna Gonzales.

Jaden Castillo was next up with a single that scored Marley Christian (a pinch-runner for Gonzales) that tied the score.

Westlake still had one more chance to close this opening  game in the bottom of the inning when Barnes had two quick outs before another hit batter and walk that put a tying run in scoring position. A grounder to Barnes and throw to Christian had this battle going into extra innings.

Adrianna Teutsch walked and then Barnes clubbed her 3rd double of this contest which put this CL  with a lead (4-3) and a chance to pull off an opening game upset.

                Let’s Go Hawk!!

Westlake would not go easy after starting their bottom of the 8th with a fly out and then next Chap singled before a Barnes’ 9th strikeout which left the home team with one out to spend.

Westlake worked a walk that had both runners moving up a base with still needing a final out for the win.

That next Westlake hitter saw nothing but strikes for a strikeout that ended this contest.

A decent night for Barnes who excelled with a bat and in the circle.

On what gave Barnes the most pleasure? Hitting or Pitching.

“I thought both striking people out and hitting were about the same when it comes to enjoyment level,” Barnes said with a smile. “I thought both hyped my team up and helped us get through it and it helps I am a fireball when it comes to being on the field period…so I know my team liked watching and I think they fed off my energy a bit also.

On what was the biggest takeaway from this contest?

Barnes commented, “My biggest takeaway from this game is believing in ourselves and knowing we can compete with bigger schools. We gained some confidence from this game and it needs to carry on for the rest of our season…we need to play like we have something to prove.”

                   Hawk Proud!!

On thoughts for Barnes playing an all-star game with her bat-fielding-pitchitng, Coach Galloway said without hesitation, “Gabby Barnes was lights out in the circle for us last night. She did a great job of getting ahead of the batters and then going right at them. Limiting the number of runners on base helped take the pressure off of our defense. You could see her confidence growing as the game went on. She wanted the ball in her hand. We couldn’t be more proud of the way she played, both defense and offense.”

Coming through in the clutch for a team that needed a marquee and resume building contest that will now have the Hawks ready for another tough team in Lehman on Thursday morning in this Navarro tourney before ending their day against Winn and finishing off against Marion.

Way to start and go get’m Hawks!!
