Lady Hawk’s Finish Basketball with Win over Davenport & Coach Burleson Quotes

Freshman Mya Vorhis & Reece Coburn getting ready for action.

Canyon Lake Ladies’ Basketball ended their season on a good note with a solid victory over Davenport, 52-33.

            Way to GO LADY HAWKS!!

The Hawks trailed once (2-3) after a 3 pointer from the Wolves during the first 34 seconds to start the game and then CL responded by outscoring their Visitors, 23-4 to end that first stanza.

Davenport did get back to a single digit deficit, 25-17 at the 4 minute mark of that next quarter but a steal and layup by Sofia George ended the half with a Hawk, 29-18 advantage.

The Lake would not be threatened for the rest of this evening with an enjoyable 19 point win and a winning season, 18-13.

George finished with 19 points followed by a 14 point effort from Reece Coburn, but it would be CL’s defense that would stifle Davenport with an added bonus of making 14 free throws.

Shelby Porter had her best all-round game scoring 5 points while keeping Canyon Lake’s offense in one spot with her 7 offensive rebounds. Porter had 2 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks for her impressive evening.

Porter and Mya Vorhis both finished with 9 rebounds which had Vorhis finishing her first season with 208 rebounds passing another freshman in 2017, Jessie Melendez who had that record securing, 166 bounds during her freshman season.

               Way to Go Lady Hawks!

Vorhis also had 3 block shots and finished with another freshman record swatting 25 balls for the season.

This CL team was 2nd behind the 2018 Lady Hawk team who finished their campaign with 482 steals. This year’s Hawk team was just short of that milestone with 452 steals.

A team that had 9 ladies with 30 or more thefts will set the stage for an array of records these next 3 years.

A similar season when CL welcomed 5 freshman to their roster was during the 2017 but that team had a foundation of Juniors who finished their season with a 12-19 record and 0-8 in district play.

This year’s group of freshman were immersed with many more opportunities to play and start compared to that 2017 team.

                                            Ayren Lightfoot 38 26

That freshman crew in 2017 had two players for their whole season while those other players  honed their skills on the Junior Varsity before moving up later during that campaign.

In a year we will be able to see results for a group of ladies who were implanted on this team. While that 2017 group was able to go 3 rounds into the playoffs and hoisting up a District Championship Banner. This upcoming season will still have some growing pains but can hopefully become more consistent.

Championship might not be in the cards next season but those seeds have certainly been planted for a more competitive team when district starts up again and hopefully garnering a post-season berth.

The Hawks brewed a good ending to their season having just 13 turnovers becoming one of many good things to continue in 8 months from now.

Way to Go Hawks!!

Head Coach Zach Burleson Quotes:

Overall Thoughts on Team: “I’ve really enjoyed this group. It has been fun watching them grow and learn this year.”

What results from Freshman playing for next year: “Anytime you are this young, you are going to have to learn a lot. I think they gained valuable experience this year.”

             Way to Go Lady Hawks!!

Your thought on seeing Allysia Menchaca finish her career? “I can’t believe that it has already been 4 years. We really enjoyed having her around. She will be missed. I look forward to hearing about her in the future. She is going to Texas State.”

Compare your Huffman Hargrave (21-4 record) game (35-38 loss) to teams in your district: “I think it goes to show how tough this district is. There is not a tougher district in the region. Pretty good chance that we will have both teams in the regional final…again.”

Consistency is the Holy Grail of High School Sports, speak to that concept with this past season: “We saw many flashes of what our potential is, which is really good. Along with experience, this group will need to spend a lot of time working on skills in the offseason, summer and next year’s preseason.”

Thanks Coach and Go Hawks!!
