CL Hawks Baseball Start District with Win Over Texans, 11-10
CL Hawks held on to open their District 28-4A with a win over Wimberley, 11-10.
“When you play your biggest rival, records go out the window,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “The players know each other well and tend to get amped up a bit more than normal. Our win wasn’t pretty but we will take it! Time to refocus on Friday.”
This game started with pitcher Tanner Schultz striking out the side. But that would be the exception instead of the rule as this contest would unfold.
The Texans had the first lead after scoring a run in theat 2nd inning but CL responded with two runs for their first lead in this ping pong match. A double, error and strikeout had Wimberley scoring on a wild pitch.
Schultz started CL’s 2 run inning with a Schultz single and then Ty Sellers walked but those next two Hawks would be outs and before a Texan error gave CL the lead back, 2-1.
Wimberley tied the score during the top of the 3rd frame with another Hawk error and a run would score on a double play.
Then CL was able to score 7 runs in the bottom of that same inning thanks in part to the Texans’ pitching staff letting two runs score on bases loaded walks. All of CL runs scored with two outs.
Then Hayden Baker had his most significant hit during his career by rapping a double to clear the bases that gave CL what would seem like a safe lead, 9-2.
But that lead evaporated when WH was able to score 3 runs in the 4th and then 2 more to start that next inning which closed the gap to a, 9-7 Hawk advantage.
Errors were instrumental in Wimberley scoring those 3 runs and that 2 run next inning had Patek going yard for a 2-run homer and a precarious, 9-7.
In the bottom of the 5th, The Lake, scored what would be their winning runs when Chase Anderson had a one out double followed by two walks and then scoring on two wild pitches and a 11-7 Lake advantage with only 2 more innings knowing that no lead would be safe.
Hunter Anderson was successful in holding the Visitors scoreless in only their 2nd inning in this battle as Canyon Lake held on to their 4 run lead. A good defensive play after a Donley single but when he was out trying to stretch his base hit to 2nd base.
Right fielder Jeremy Greene to Travis Parma to Baker resulted in getting out of that inning.
It was a feast or famine for the Texan’s pitching in walking 10 and striking out 8 Hawks.
With one inning remaining, Hunter Anderson, was greeted with a Prado double and then another CL error scored Wimbo’s 8th run. Hunter was lifted for Griffen Williams and still needing two outs. Griffen would induce two ground outs but a single would score the final run and a Williams save.
With 5 errors, only 5 hits, and a pitching staff giving up 9 hits and 10 runs would be a perfect storm that helped keep WHS in this game and within striking distance..
In year’s past with those type of statistics this night would have been chalked up as a loss and a sorrowful ride home, but things have changed these past few seasons as this was a very ugly game that turned into a humbling win.
Chase Anderson continues with his hot bat leading the team with 2 hits and one being a two-bagger. Anderson has a 15 game hitting streak and his next quest would be 19 games reaching base safely set by Brandon Robinson.
And the refocus will start quickly with another tough battle at Wimberley on Friday.
Stay humble and Go Hawks!!
