CL Hawks Do a Split Again with Win Over Brennan and Loss to Victoria East
The Canyon Lake Hawks split two more games on Friday with a win over SA Brennan, 11-3 before meeting a superior Victoria East team who controlled the Hawks, 7-3.
That loss was against a school that finished this round robin games undefeated and CL will now be paired up against Harlingen with the first pitch at 10am on Saturday.
“They are a good ball club,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said in response to the loss. “On our first game we had some hard hit balls and did a great job.”
The Lake run ruled Brennan Bears after scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the 4th frame that allowed Luke Rosin (2-0) to finish helping save pitching counts that can many times drain a team during tournament play.
Griffen Williams unleashed two homers that bracketed dead center field fence having each dinger landing on either side. Both home-runs accounted for 4 runs which also set Williams in sole position of the Hawk leader in this category distancing himself from Travis Walker (assistant coach) and Logan Felch who both finished their careers with six.
Williams was in good form at 3rd base with some solid plays that helped keep these Bears in catch-up mode throughout this contest.
“I learned to play back and by playing deeper has allowed me to come down on the ball,” Williams said when responding bout how well his defense has been at 3rd base.
On Williams two home runs: “I have been working on hitting up the middle by sitting back,..and I can usually tell when I hit the ball and I knew both were gone today.”
The Hawk team has a nerf ball with a plastic basket that is used for a player that hits a home run and Williams had a great dunk with a silhouette with that first home run but on that second had Williams missing the mark big time, “I was trying a 360 between the legs and I got fouled.”
Ty Sellers’ bat has awakened in the past few games and on this day had his 2nd home-run this season while hitting a double during this double-header. A slugging percentage of 1.000 that has Sellers selling some good mojo as this season continues to mature.
On seeing the ball well in the last three games, “I am focusing on waiting for better pitches to hit,” Sellers gave an account on his .438 batting average this season. “You have to get hits to earn it.”
As a team CL has a decent .528 slugging percentage with a team .329 batting average.
Now Canyon Lake will try to finish the Comal Tourney with a winning, 3-2 record against Harlingen.
