Canyon Lake Qualified 9 Athletes for Regionals
Nine athletes from Canyon Lake’s Track Teams will be able to compete for another day after their Area Track meet on Wednesday.
“Our team performed very well at the District 27-28 Area Meet,” Head Girl’s Track Team Coach assessed. “A couple of athletes missed going on to regionals by one place, but really competed and put in their best efforts. Several athletes placed 4th or better and are moving on to Regionals in Kingsville.”
The Lake on the girls side finished in 6th place with 54 points with 5 ladies punching their ticket for Regionals.
Ayren Lightfoot placed 3rd in the 400 meter dash and was one of 4 that qualified in the 4×400 meter relay.
Cadence Patterson finished 3rd in the 1600 meter run and did one better in her 3200 meter run placing 2nd.
Claire Schroeder had a 2nd place finish in her 300 meter hurdles and in so doing established a new Hawk Record with a 46.688 dash. That record had a life of 11 years when Jessica Cunningham ran a 46.90. Cunningham was moved down to 2nd place in her Pole Vault height when Alencia Lentz finished with a 13-03.50 vault during the Texas Relays earlier this season. Cunningham was the first Hawk Trackster to compete in Austin after an 11-01 vault in 2010.
Schroeder and Lentz are on the 4×400 foursome and will be teaming up with Lightfoot.
Maddie Pipkin will have to be the 4th person on that 4×400 meter team that have ran the record down to 4:04.84 earlier this season.
For the Boy’s Track Team finished 9th scoring 28 points with Coby Mickey finishing 2nd in his Pole Vault event clearing 13-06 which was his best in competition this year. That jump came at a good time with each meet not qualifying now means no more meets.
Shayne Moss will be coming out of the blocks in the 100 & 200 meter dashes after qualifying with a 3rd (100m) and 4th (200m) place.
Connor Windham hit over 46 feet (46-05.75) again in his Shot Put event and will have one more chance to throw a 47 foot throw and nudge Robert Woods (47-03.50) down from his #1 ranking.
Marshall McConnell finished 3rd (5-10) during the High Jump completion with another chance to make that 6’00 goal and which would give a better chance to punch his ticket for Austin.
Honorable mention Hawks that performed at the Area Meet was Sophomore Sofia George with a 5th place in the Triple Jump.
Freshman Hannah Hammer finished 5th in the 800 meter run and that performance was enduring an injury.
The Ladies 4×100 meter relay finished 5th with Ortez, George, Schroeder, and Oberholtzer still enjoying a successful season.
Freshman Dalton Stromquist had an 8th place finish on his triple jump and will look to improve next year and bring home some medals.
The Regional Meet will commence April 29-30 at Kingsville A&M with a chance for making a short drive to Austin.
The future is bright with only one Senior (Connor Windham) and all the rest returning next year.
Congrats Hawks!!
