CL Hawks Baseball Whipped the Billies after Finding Bats, 10-4
After seeing Fredericksburg use their first two innings scoring 4 runs, Canyon Lake finally decided to take control in the 3rd inning by scoring 10 unanswered runs and winning the first game of this series.
“What we did tonight was what we were doing in our early scrimmages and we have not been doing that lately and we just have to be more aggressive on our hitting counts,’ Head Coach Victor Escamilla said eloquently. “The reality is we will be facing the team’s ones and twos (top two pitchers) and that is what we will see for the rest of the season and we will have to put the ball in play in our count and not strikeout.”
Aggressive, at bats, turned to runs with 14 hits that had 7 dingers going for extra bases. Chase Anderson had his first career homer and Tanner Schultz broke out of a slump hitting his 3rd home run in his career.
Chase Anderson started his hit parade with a double to start the 3rd frame and then Hunter Anderson used some speed for his bunt single (his 2nd on this night) and CL would score 3 runs that helped reel in these Billies which put the Home team within reach, trailing 4-3, with 4 innings still left to be completed.
The Lake used 8 players in that 3 run third inning and then upped their game sending 11 Hawks to the plate the next frame that had two homers and two doubles and scored 7 runs for enough separation to end this affair, 10-4.
C Anderson started this 7 run inning with a one out homer over the left-field fence that tied the score.. C Anderson is presently on an 18 game hitting streak and in his last 4 games have been multi-hit contests as his career batting average (.423 ave.) creeped over Matthew McLain’s (.421 ave.) as helium continues to be pumped into this rising player’s balloon.
Canyon Lake had a lead like this against Wimberley a week earlier that resulted into a much different ending after the Texans closed that 7 run gap which caused CL to take a one run win and, 11-10 finish.
This contest had Schultz settling in and spreading the hits without issuing any base on balls keeping any signs of a comeback in the rear view mirror. Schultz and H Anderson were able to spread 4 singles in those last 5 innings with no walks helping to keep this game in their win column.
Canyon Lake had a slow start after leaving one Hawk in scoring position with less than 2 outs to start this battle and then leaving another two runners in that 2nd frame as well without a score.
Meanwhile, the Billies would score 2 runs in both of those innings which accounted for 6 hits but that was when Schultz started to control this game and having Hunter Anderson come in to close out these Visitors by striking out the side and giving up just one hit.
Last week that was not the case after seeing CL struggle with their relievers. H Anderson seems to be the chosen closer as district continues for a chance to repeat as District 28-4A Champion.
Now CL will see if they can complete this week with a sweep of the Billies with a Boerne (Elephant in the room) team on the docket for next week’s schedule.
Quotes: Chase Anderson
On what changes has happened for being on such a hot streak with his bat these past couple of years? “I have been working hard but it was when I started to rest my bat on my shoulders which would limit motion and that helped seeing the ball on a more flat plane,”
On thoughts on the slow start: “We were more in the moment and we started finding our game but we will work on starting faster….we are dangerous down our lineup and we can score when we are doing our thing at the plate….and that helps out our pitchers too!”
On thoughts on how his twin brother (Hunter) in finding his place as a closer, “He has been working his as…(derriere) off and has increased his speed two to three mph and he has been spot on and can face anybody…his pitches have a ton of movement.”
Are you having fun? “Hell yeah…I am having a blast but we will have to win on Friday!! A win will be great for our playoff seed… we just have to win on Friday!”
Quotes: Tanner Schultz
On thoughts of hitting that home run: “It felt good off the bat. That homer broke my slump…I had to do (hit a home-run) after what Chase did and that helped us win the ball game.”
On settling in with his pitching after those first couple of innings: “We started playing defense better and did not have any errors….”
Way to Go Hawks!!
