CL Hawks Ladies Soccer Lose to Boerne, 2-1 in a Game of Inches

Canyon Lake’s Lady Soccer team ended their season after a hard fought loss to Boerne, 2-1.

Sophomore Madison Snipes is one of many underclassmen ready for going further next year.

The Hawks did not win as many games as last year’s surprise team but still had a campaign that finished in the same Regional Quarterfinal round and against the same Greyhound team.

Comparing the past two seasons you would notice how much more competitive this year was after losing 7-1 last year and a 2-1 final this time around.

CL lost several Seniors last year compared with two 2022 Seniors that will be getting their diploma in 2 months.

“This was a game of inches,” Head Coach Kara Stracener said when responding on how close this battle was and calculating all of those misses by both clubs that were close for a score for either team. “We are not use to winning yet as we had just one (1-13 in 2019) and three (3-7-3 2020) wins before last season and we are just learning to be winners.”

Coach Stracener continued, “We have set the bar high and this will be our expectations now that we have reached this round these last two seasons…we are capable of attaining this each year with hard work.”

Boerne was Boerne and took an early lead before Maddie Olberholtzer was able to will her way for a shot on goal from 23 yards out from the midfield that tied the game at the 22:57 mark in the first half.

Congrats & Way to Go Hawks!!

The Greyhounds would get their, what would be a game winner goal, moments later as each team traded defensive position after a scoreless 2nd Half.

Defense was spot on for Sophomore Madison Snipes through much of this contest. “Up until our last game I needed her (Snipes) fielding as a midfielder and she was consistent and did a super job for us,” Coach Stracener showered praise. “She is super coachable and she continues to get better.”

“Last year we were beat, 7-1,” Snipes recalled. “We had great improvement but we were not communicating as the game continued and that was one of our weaknesses and we are still learning skills…..our midfield had trouble shifting and we have got to get better.”

On what CL’s goals will be as the Hawks lose two players with the rest of this team having another chance to continue this upward climb, “We will need to continue to improve and give ourselves more opportunities to go further and win more games.”

Said like an up and comer who has a slew of more teammates ready to make noise next season and making what should be more firsts for Girl’s Soccer.

Great Year and Way to Go Hawks!!
