Hawk’s Have Tough Loss to Fredericksburg, 5-2

Riley Glenn-Millhouse is having a stellar year defensively and with her bat.

The Hawks spotted Fredericksburg 4 runs in the 1st inning resulting in another close loss to the Billies, 5-2.

               Hit’em Hard Hawks!!

This loss still has CL in 3rd place in the district race and now will need to sweep Davenport and Bandera to secure that position for the playoffs as a 3rd seed.

On starting Rianna Gonzales over Gabby Barnes, Head Coach Hayley Galloway stated, “She had a good game her last time out we just don’t play good defense behind her.”

That is certainly a truism which can be seen based on the numbers of runs given up compared to how many of those scores were earned.

In Gonzales 13 games pitching Canyon Lake has allowed half of their runs given up unearned while she is in the circle.

“Last time we played Fredericksburg it was just the opposite where our worst inning was at the end of the game and tonight we started bad,” Coach Galloway continued. “They understand that in this game we had a chance but now we will have to stay competitive as we finish district.”

That dastardly ‘complete’ game snafu made an appearance after completing their best outing in CL’s last two games.

                             Let’s Go Hawk!!

Between those book-end innings against the Billies, Canyon Lake has shown that they have the ability to get a win but that can only come with a better defense. In this loss, CL had 5 miscues which left your Hawks losing by 3 runs.

The Lake, did have a one run advantage to start the game and then got within 2 runs in their 3rd inning while Hawk Pitcher Gabby Barnes was taking control of the Billies and finished with 7 strikeouts while not giving up any earned runs.

Pitching was on target but just missing out on some timely hitting and better defense might have made this game come out differently.

Barnes (2 doubles) and Riley Glenn-Millhouse 2 hits that knocked in Barnes for those two Hawk runs led the way offensively.

Jaden Castillo is all business when she is ready to bat.

Canyon Lake had some help from Jaden Castillo who is presently on an 8 game hitting streak and her last strikeout was her first at bat against Lehman which was CL’s 2nd game this season. That equates to 66 straight plate appearances without walking back to the dugout with the bat on her shoulder.

Castillo has reached base in all but 5 games and many of those outings she had just one plate appearance due to run ruling their opponent in tournaments.

Couple that with amassing 15 base on balls will give you an idea of how disciplined Castillo is when she steps into that batter’s box.

On what Castillo’s thoughts are when she approaches her at bats, “I just know it is my job and it becomes a team effort and now after this loss we will have to work harder….we don’t have another option and the only way is up!”

CL Softball has made a good turn-a-round and the game has been ‘UP’ and now it comes down to 3 games and finishing with a 2-1 record and that will get this team from a 7 win year to a 19 win finish this year and a 3rd seed with a post season date.
