PR’s Galore for CL Hawk Girl’s Track Team

Canyon Lake Ladies Track & Field team made great strides during the District 28-4A Meet with several personal records (pr) as this year’s group had several freshman and sophomores making their claim of being one of the best up and comers as this year’s continues at the Area Meet in Cuero next.
Texas Country is Proud of CL’s Lady Track & Field Team.
“What a great job our girls did for this meet and this season,” Head Girls Coach Sami Theurer stated. “I am so proud of all the hard work and improvement I’ve witnessed this season. Way to go girlies!! We had a lot of PRs, some new school records and a team of girls moving on to Area.”
Coach Theurer continued, “We have 13 athletes that have qualified for the Area Meet in Cuero and will travel on Wednesday, April 20th to compete. We are so excited to be representing Canyon Lake High School. Go Hawks!!”
This group of ladies have had a good year in etching their name on CL’s All-Time Top 10 and there will be more opportunities to continue an upward climb.
The Lake had 4 that squeezed into the top 10 in the mile run with Cadence Patterson being 28 seconds better than Kaitlyn Yuill’s 5:51.57 that she ran in 2017. Patterson (11:48.10) already held the 3200 record but this year came in with a time that is almost one minute faster than what Mariah Ellis ran (12:45.43) in 2015.
Hannah Hammer (2:27.28) moved up to #1 in the 800 meter run beating out Hannah Graves who had held her mark of 2:27.78 since 2012.
“I just keep pushing for it in practice,” Hammer said when asked how she attacks one of the toughest events. “I just stay in the pack and give it my all at the end!”
In running the 3rd leg in the mile relay, “I just want to stay determined and not give up…I think it is calmer running the third leg and it lets me stay in a zone.”
Those distance races had not been a strong event for Canyon Lake through the years and now there will be several ladies with their eyes on improving times so being on this list can last a long time. Reagan Reinarz, Avery Hime and Annalyse Perkins will certainly have many future meets to get recognized.
Claire Schroeder & Brilee Eaton love the hurdles.
The 100 and 300 hurdles showed some promise too with Clarire Schroeder (47.14) bettering her times last year in the 300 meter hurdles and place 2nd on the all-time list within striking distance of a mark that has been around since 2011 by Jessica Cunningham (46.90).
Another newcomer is Freshman Brilee Eaton who has a 9th place (16.98) in the 100 meter hurdles and at district broke the 50 second barrier with 49.43 and is now tied with Alyssa Strickland in 5th place.
On when the light turned on this year Eaton remembered, “It was the Tivy Meet. When I got my times it wanted me to keep going and now my goal is to keep up with Claire (Schroeder).”
When told how close Schroeder was to having the best 300 hurdle time, “Wow, that makes me happy…I did not know I was that close now I can push a little harder!”
Sofia George reached 4th place with a 34-04 mark in the triple jump which had been one of the best events back when Marisa Ellis, Bailey Drum and Skylar Hurst were jumping 36 and 37 feet. Ellis made state two years while at Canyon Lake.
Of course the Pole Vault has been mentioned this year with Junior Alencia Lentz (13-03.50) now has topped Jessica Cunningham by 2 feet. Lentz will have an opportunity to reach state as she holds the best mark in the state for a chance to show her skills in Austin this May.
Another first came in the 4×400 meter relay with the foursome of Schroeder, Alencia, Hammer and Lightfoot (4:04.84) broke the previous Hawk record by 2 seconds. These four ladies will all be back next year with more chances to bring their time down.
Maddie Pipkin is a permanent resident at CLHS from basketball to track seasons.
A young team with just enough experience sprinkled in while seeing some athletes like Maddie Pipkin active in several events but more importantly being active in so many sports during the year.
Why don’t you play softball? “I went to the cages and I couldn’t swing a bat,” Pipkin said with a smile.
Pipkin picks up a basketball and then ends that season while soccer is going into district play and then goes to track after soccer ends makes for a busy schedule. One that her parents were probably overjoyed when she got her driver’s license.
On how hard it is to do two sports when both are going on at the same time, “It takes a lot effort but I get a lot of help from my coaches. They get me a schedule and so I always know what is next. I don’t think bout going from one sport to another one…I just go and do it. But it does keep me busy but I think I am coachable and that is the key.”
A team that can certainly start competing for wins in the future but for now it is working on getting more PRs.
