CL Hawks 2022 Football Schedule & Season Preview

Canyon Lake will be playing 4 new opponents this season.

Canyon Lake’s Football team will look to grow full beards during this upcoming year after another humbling 6-5 season that had way too many, ‘don’t shave that close’ encounters.

Two year’s ago, The Lake, downfall came during a 4th quarter where a game was lost after enjoying a lead or tie going into their final stanza:

Score going into the 4th Quarter Final Score
           Hawks 20 Wimberley 10 Lost 24-22
           Hawks 24 Jourdanton 24 Lost 38-24
           Hawks 20 Blanco 20 Lost 41-40
           Hawks 14 Austin LBJ 13 Lost 21-14
           Hawks 31 Calallen 21 Lost 37-31

Those 5 losses had the Hawks being outscored, 73-22 and 20 of those points was that loss to Blanco in overtime. Taking that game out of the equation showed a, 51-2 deficit during those final 12 minutes of action.

This past campaign that forgettable stanza came after coming out from their halftime concession stand break.

3rd & 4th Quarter Results in those 5 losses last season.

Halftime Score 3rd Quarter Points Final Score
         Hawks 3 Wimberley 13 Hawks 0 Texans 7 Lost 20-03
         Hawks 14 Alamo Hts. 14 Hawks 0 Mules 17 Lost 38-21
         Hawks 21 Austin LBJ 21 Hawks 0 LBJ 7 Lost 34-28
         Hawks 14 Freddie 10 Hawks 0 Billies 21 Lost 31-28
         Hawks 21 Boerne 7 Hawks 0 Boerne 7 Lost 28-21

Case and point was losing to State Ranked Austin LBJ by 6 points, a team that played and fell short in their State Championship contest.

How bout that 3 point loss to Freddie? After capturing some 4th quarter momentum, Canyon Lake would lose after a defensive offside penalty on a failed 4th down try for the Billies and that play was converted to a first down and running out the clock.

All but one district battle finished with a victory being by more than 7 points when CL took Taylor by 22 points, 39-17.

                  Let’s Hit Em Hard Hawks!

Then getting an invite for the post-season as a 4th seed against Boerne turned out to be another second half let down losing a two touchdown lead and seeing the Greyhounds scoring 21 unanswered points in a, 21-28 loss.

Last year, in those losses, CL average a touchdown during those last two quarters giving an indication of how close this group could have enacted some pain if those needed corrections might have come to fruition.

Now a new season with a large group of players returning for a chance where CL could come away with their 2nd district championship.

With most of this Hawk’s offensive line returning for a good group of offensive skill set players will have a chance of getting this train back on track.

Helijah Johnson and Shayne Moss would be two players that will need to keep their guns loaded for an entire game.

Keep it going Hawks and Fly High!!

Hunter Anderson returning for another season taking snaps while welcoming in another Junior Varsity that won a District Championship. CL’s Junior Varsity has won their last two district championships making this season a can’t miss scenario. That included two grades of JV Championships.

Add last year’s Freshman team who had a Phoenix experience from their middle school years into a team that finished 2nd during their district run and an upcoming group of new 9th Graders that had a similar run like this year’s Seniors had during their successful MVMS career.

Those 8th Grade Boy’s A & B teams combined for a 13-2-1 record compared to SV’s Middle Schools that had a combined, 14-15-2 slate.

“This will be the first time that we will actually have an A & B Freshman football team,” Head Football Coach Charley Drum stated. “In the past we have had those Green and Gold teams with sophomores and juniors and we are excited to get them up here!!”

The Lake is certainly rising with success at each grade level which has not been the case to this degree ever in these past 13 years.

                      Let’s Go Hawks!!

What to expect for this upcoming season will have the Hawks facing some different schools in district for the first time.

Davenport Wolves finished with a 6-4 record in their first year playing varsity schools and all a Hawk Fan would need to see is their, 41-27 win over Blanco to know this will not be an automatic win seeing CL’s 7-0 outcome during their 2021 season.

The Hawks will have 3 games against first-timers in Boerne Champion (Sept 9), Veterans Memorial (Sept. 16th), and East Central (Sept. 23).

Last year Boerne Champion finished (9-3), Veterans was (6-5), and East Central (7-5) and all three either a 5A or 6A Classification should prepare Canyon Lake for another change with Marble Falls being a former 5A squad replacing Fredericksburg.

The Lake will now have Freddie and Wimbo on their non-district schedule added to those 3 teams above thus adding 5 formidable opponents to this rough slate. All 5 schools had a combined, 41-26 record.

Marble Falls will start District 13-4A play followed by Davenport, Burnet, Taylor and finishing with Lampasas. This Badger game will be the longest road trip followed by Burnet.

Hawk Proud!!

On how this set of teams were picked after announcing the alignments, “It was a crazy day because we are usually down there and it is easier to schedule face to face but that was an icy day which meant I was working from home,” Coach Drum said. “We were wanting to schedule Alamo Heights again but they were put in a district with 9 teams which meant they would have just one out of district game. So, while I was talking with them,  they mentioned that Champion was looking for a game and that is how they were added to our schedule.

Then we talked with Fredericksburg (who will have their first district season with Canyon Lake) and they did not want to schedule us but I told them that we had played every year and we still wanted to keep them on our schedule.”

That has to be a nerve racking day especially when you factor in the weather causing two other Hawk Coaches working other sites at the same time and hoping there would be no double bookings, etc.

Coach Drum thoughts on this year’s district schools, “Davenport moves in and has an advantage because they played other varsity schools last year and got a taste of those Friday Night games….they will be an athletic team!”

                      Let’s Go Hawks!!

“Marble Falls played in an Austin district last year and they will be tough,” Coach Drum continued. “They were a 5A school last year and play a slot-t offense and Burnet has improved every year and gave us all we wanted last season…their coach is doing a good job and have a good crop coming up.”

Burnet won district with their Freshman class two years ago and had several players on varsity as Sophomores last season and will debut with some higher goals this season.

“Taylor was improving last year and they will be better and Lampasas lost their last pieces from their run (of wins) and they should still be explosive but they are losing a good linebacker and that good offensive line…man those were some big dudes,” Coach Drum finished with his district assessment.

“We lost Kolten Ramey one of the best players in district but we got some good playing time for Chase (Anderson) and (Adrian) Duque…but we will have more questions on defense this year,” Drum beat bout what the Hawks will have coming back.

“Our offensive line should be better this season with Andrew Miller who is a fighter and he knows how to use his quickness to his advantage…he will remind you of how (Chris) Kopecky played a few years back…not big but he was quick and a fighter and he had a good career at Canyon Lake.”

Let’s Have a Great Season Hawks!!

“We will have a very athletic line with Freddie (Santiago), (Sonny) Bentley, (Brett) Harwell, Griff(en) Williams and Ryan Verette all having games underneath them with our quarterback Hunter (Anderson) coming back and that is what we hope for with an offense that might not have size but they have all been playing together since the 7th Grade and many of them have been on varsity since their sophomore year,” Coach said with vigor.

Recap, The Lake, has a chance of finishing first in district as long as they can jettison that one bad quarter per game for what should be a much longer run in their post-season.

A tough non-district schedule that should have Canyon Lake primed for a good year with a good long beard.

Let’s GO HAWKS!!
