Hawks Survive with, 4-3 Win to Tie Series with Blue Jays,1-1
Canyon Lake takes 2nd game of the 3 game series and will go to battle on Saturday with the first pitch at 1:00pm in La Grange.
“We just use our players to see how they will contribute,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said in response of having two starters out and going deep into the bench for this win.
On Roskin’s save opportunity, “I noticed that Tanner was getting tired and this is what Roskin does he his clutch in those situations.”
The Hawks would need a good pitching game on this night and Tanner Schultz obliged pitching 6 innings before bowing out to Luke Roskin who struck out the side to preserve a must win.
Roskin has been nails in relief and that continued but this time he entered this game coming from left field which allowed only 9 pitches to warm-up.
Earlier this season the learning curve for this Sophomore had helped for a more successful season because on that day being pulled of not warming up completely.
What was Roskin’s thinking with only 9 pitches to be ready? “A lot of it is mental and I had been locked in playing left-field and I just used my pitches to get a feel for what was working.”
A huge save to help continue the season…what were you thinking, “Do this for the team and just try to be as selfless as possible because this was for the Seniors.”
It was Roskin’s 3rd save that has him needing just one more to tie Kyler Huff with 4 back during the 2013 season.
Tanner Schultz recorded his 29th win as a Hawk with a chance to pitch again with a win this Saturday.
“I though I had it,” Schultz said when responding on how he felt before the game started. “I felt that two of my pitches that were crucial were working for me.”
That was certainly the case during the two innings after CL took their 3 run lead and Schultz retired 6 of 7 batters while throwing 14 total pitches.
“We are just going out to win tomorrow and beat Needville with our pitching,” Schultz closed on what was needed to continue The Lake’s campaign.
The Lake struck first when Jeremy Greene singled with two outs during the top of the 2nd frame and scored on an error on the Blue Hay’s catcher when trying to throw out Roskin after a strikeout after dropping the pitch and throwing the ball into right field.
Greene scored and Roskin ended up on 3rd base where he was stranded without any more damage.
Needville tied the score during their next inning with one walk and 3 batters later scoring on a Hawk infield error.
CL would respond with a 3 run inning when Griffen Williams and Schultz were hit by back to back pitches and then a full count walk to Greene which would be the only walk given up by the Blue Jay’s pitcher loading the bases.
The first run scored was on a NHS error before Chase Anderson had a two out single scoring those winning runs.
Needville would make the game interesting on their final at bat opening the inning with a walk and double and then Coach Escamilla would call on Roskin for a save.
Roskin struck out the first batter he faced and then a grounder was fielded by CL but trying to get the lead Blue Jay runner backfired when he beat the throw loading the bases.
A balk allowed the final Needville run to score and then a strikeout ended the game with another chance to finalize this series on Saturday.
This game will come down to the team that can calm the nerves for a chance to continue the post-season.
