CL Hawk Varsity’s Last Dress Rehearsal Wimberley Next

Canyon Lake Hawk’s Defense was on the mark in both Scrimmages!!

Canyon Lake finished their Exhibition portion of the season with a hard fought and testy Elgin Wildcat’s team.

  MIMA’s TACOS LOVES THE HAWKS!!

Will the Hawk’s be ready for a Wimberley team that has an all-time 10-3 record against The Lake?  Since football began (2008) there has been Blanco as the opening game 10 years and that had CL with a break-even record (5-5).

There was a two year stint against Marble Falls and Canyon Lake swept those two openers and now Wimberley has been that first out of the chute team that presently is on a two year opening season winning streak.

All told that first game has been a win-win/lose-lose situation holding with a, 7-7 record just breaking even. Let’s just say that the Hawks have not been a great team in starting the season. There was a two year window that had your home team scoring 78 combined points which had those Hawks sporting a, 17-7 two year record.

Bottom line your Hawks are averaging 16.5 points per game not counting that inaugural season when every opponent had a field day except for Ingram when CL scored 21 of their 72 points in that only win that year. There has been 6 opening contests that CL’s scoreboard totaled  7 or fewer points. Not counting that two game swing during the Hawk’s hay-day the average dips to 12 points of offense per outing.

                Go Hawks & Fly High!!

You get the idea, Canyon Lake is not noted for coming out of the gate with all cylinders in motion to say the least.

There is some good news tho on the defensive side of the ledger that has The Lake doing much better holding opponents to an average 12.8 points, not counting those 63 points allowed during The Lake’s first ever contest against those Panthers.

That comes to 9 years of holding an opponent to two touchdowns or less. The defensive side of the ball has helped keep those games close enough for a possible win.

Thus the defense has glowed during these last two scrimmages and has been nails in not allowing a score that totaled 3 live quarters.

Yardage given up thus far has been solid with case and point below:

Scrimmaged Teams Cuero/Elgin
Total Yards Allowed 119
First Downs 9
Rush/Yards 15/78
Comp/Att/Int 4/14/1
Passing Yards 41

Canyon Lake’s Head Coach, Charley Drum commented after this last scrimmage, “We were sloppy and out of sync but we responded well during those two live quarters….but we still have a lot of growth because those bullets will be real next week.”

Quarterback Hunter Anderson

QB Hunter Anderson was spot on during the live scrimmage completing 6 out of 7 passes for 79 yards that had a highlight reel catch with Helijah Johnson on the edge of the end-zone, catching the ball with 6 arms (including his) with a chance of batting down or catching the pass from 30 yards out. It was caught.

Those 79 yards through the air was better than 9 games Canyon Lake played last season to give an indication on how well this game went or how dismal last season was in passing the rock. Either way you answer, this stat, can show if that type of game might open up those running lanes for teams with 8 or 9 in the box.

“It was a 4th and long and I just took a shot,” Anderson surmised in a business like manner.

On what CL will need to accomplish in practices this next week that can give the Hawks a good chance to beat Wimberley, “It will take two words…Discipline & Poise. We will need to work as a unit instead of one…we will need to be selfless!”

It should be a good opener with a chance of gauging what this season might have in store but a good start would have Canyon Lake’s offense hitting on all cylinders.
