CL Hawks Start Football Season, 1st Scrimmage in 11 Days

Canyon Lake began their 15th year of varsity football this week with hopes of securing their 2nd district championship since the 2017 season.

Helijah Johnson prepares for Senior Season.

During that 2017 season CL was able to garner a 35 point per game average and a defense that matched that output holding their opponents with 18 points.

“Great first day,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “(It) reminds me of 2017, with all the seniors coming back with tons of experience in intense and important games.”

As far as important games goes, this year’s schedule will shape up to be a notch above what that 2017 squad faced on paper that had a 5 school district and won all those contests by double digits.

A down year for a 3A Blanco and two higher classified schools in 5A Austin Reagan and 6A Akins putting up a smidgen of resistance that proved to be futile. (Next Generation Star Trek voice)

The Lake did suffer set-backs with Wimberley and Giddings losing both battles by single digits. (7 points-Wimbo & 5 points-Giddings)

This year’s campaign will have some schools with several skins on their wall which should help prepare this group for the rigors in those district games that count.

The Hawks will start their season against an arch nemesis, Wimberley, who enters this opening game of this season on a 3 year winning streak over a CL team that has failed to scare the Texans with their slot-t offense. Canyon Lake only averaged 11 points in those losses while WHHS scored right over 26 points during this 3 year skid.

Let’s Have a Great Season Hawks!!

Fredericksburg will enter this year’s contest not sharing the same district for the first time but these Billies have had an upper hand against your Hawks winning 3 of their last 4 outings.

The next 3 non-district evenings will pit CL against Boerne-Champion, San Antonio Veterans Memorial and San Antonio East Central.

Two 5A Schools and Champion is picked 3rd in their district and Veterans Memorial is 2nd according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

6A SA East Central has been prognosticated with a 4th place finish for their district.

All 5 schools are picked to have a post-season slate which shows the difference between what that 2017 Hawk team faced versus this season.

                    Make it count Hawks!!

In the Hawk’s district, Marble Falls dropped down from 5A and will open CLHS season followed by the Davenport Wolves. With those next 3 teams being old foes in sharing the same district these past 4 years. Burnet-Taylor-Lampasas which will conclude this 10 game season.

Enough to say grace over for a Senior Class that has been dreamed about since their Freshman year when they continued their dominance winning district then added those next two seasons taking the JV District Crowns in similar fashion.

Now with 12 returning starters and accepting a JV district champion for a stage that is set for Canyon Lake to secure that 2nd championship and hopefully an encore to boot.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
