This Year: First game of season for both schools.

================================================================

Okay, we will get this going with this rivalry reminding a casual fan that Wimberley represents Texas University and Canyon Lake would fill the shoes of Texas A&M.

Yes, this is a big rivalry for the Hawks but it might not be quite as important to the Texans as represented by winning 11 of the past 14 years.

The Lake will be up against a Wimberley defense that simply is not afraid of our slot-t offense. The Texans have faced this offense at least twice a year adding Navarro who is a much better slot-t team in a nutshell.

Canyon Lake will need to solve their major problem of starting slow with first game jitters. With a 7-7 record in those first game jitters having been around for a while. There was a 2 years stretch, 2017-18 seasons, the Hawks scored 78 points beating Blanco who was the opening curtain foe those seasons.

Now with this being the 3rd year in facing WHS out of the gate you factor in a team that has outscored Canyon Lake with an average of,  30-17 since this series was started.

Being the first game there is just not enough information that can be found from your opponent.

What is known is that Wimberley’s both Sub-Varsities beat Canyon Lake last season which can give an idea of who moved up to replace last year’s seniors would favor the Texans.

Starters returning for Wimberley has 5 on the offensive side and 2 for their defense. In being a regional finalist last season helps give those non-starters a ton of practice and more chances of playing and that should make those above numbers of starters seem less of a potential head ache for a school like Wimberley.

Players to watch will be Defensive Lineman Shay Shroyer who was awarded an all-district claim and Linebacker Jack Riser who will also line up as a receiver.

Wimberley will always be tough as Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has WHS slotted as the 7th best school in their Pre-Season 4A Division II rankings.

What will Canyon Lake need to do for a win? Get out of those first game doldrums would be a good first step. Then CLHS has to have a good game on their defensive side of the line as this Battle of the Devil’s Backbone could have both teams struggling to reach that 20 point plateau.

Another item that stopped so many games last season was those small mistakes coming from turnovers and penalties…if The Lake can limit those type of miscues then chances of pulling off a win increase.

The game starts at 7:30 in what should be a packed house with some Wimberley has families closer to Canyon Lake High School than some Hawk fans that reside around Hwy 281 or Startzville.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
